“I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton," he said. “Actually none of you might know that my mum’s [sur]name is Larbalestier. And I’m just about to put that in my name. Because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name."

How is that woke? I've never understood why a female would change her surname and take on the husbands family name.

Because in the English speaking world we have patrilineal inheritance.
The Spanish do it somewhat differently, with children inheriting their mother's name as well as their fathers, but for their children the (grand)mother's name is dropped.
It's purely practical, otherwise we'd end up with names from a Monty Python sketch.

Plus it's totally silly anyway. Hamilton hasn't added his mother's name to his own - he's added his grandfather's name. Yeah, smash that patriarchy...
