One for the oldies

Randomly checking in on the club website, I noticed this interview with Rodney Fern, who sadly died a few years back.

I'm sure downsouf, Old Warwick Fox, Thorney, I remember Albert Cheeseborough and others who remember Rod will find it interesting.

In addition to his views on some of the players from the late 60s and early 70s, he talks about two home games that I remember really well. The F A Cup replay win against Man City in early 68 was a cracker and his goal from an overhead kick against Birmingham in the first home game after we were relegated, was another great moment.

The Ashby Grammar School headmaster's comment in Rodney's school report gets a mention: 'he'll never make his living as a footballer'! Coincidentally, last night I was boring the other half with a story about playing cricket against Ashby Grammar School, where idly flicking though the back pages of their scorebook while waiting to bat, I found the names of my heroes Fern and Nish frequently appearing.

Yes, stirring up the old grey matter here Vulpesy. I missed this one so I am grateful you’ve brought it to our attention. There are (or were) highlights of “Rodneee”’s debut game on YT (in 4 or 5 sections, I do believe). As skilful as he could be, he occasionally messed up. His persona shone through though.

There was a goal he scored against Norwich in early 1971, I think it was, with such an awkward jump that the ball should have gone anywhere but into the net.

Excuse the idiosyncrasy but I best recall the Birmingham game as such: On 8th August 1969 the Beatles crossed Abbey Road (famous album cover). The following day, on 9th August, Len Glover crossed from the left wing of Filbert Street for Rodney Fern to hammer in that super overhead kick.

I was at both those those games. Couldn’t believe we lost. But I always enjoyed my trips to Filbert street

Thanks for these memories Vulpes, it brings a warm glow remembering those heady days! Ah yes - Rodney Fern what a character and will never forget that overhead kick. Gone too early but will live long in the memory

Great memories Vulpes. I always say that Man city cup replay was the best game I saw at Filbert Street. Rodney Fern was not a great goalscorer but he scored some great goals.

I remember him well- "he's here, he's there, he's every f...... where, Rodney Fern, Rodney Fern". It was a hot day for that overhead scissors kick, the 1st match of the season.

A good read, thanks for the link. I too was at the Cup replay and the Birmingham game featuring Rod Ferns overhead kick. Great memories.
