DPL v Burton Albion

I wonder how we will perform in this one. Will the Wellens brigade be bothered or will they be shamed by some of the January signings into putting a bit of effort into this one before we go 2 or 3 behind?

I expect Williams will not have sharpened up in the days since he last provided safe passage up the wing for the Shrewsbury attackers and it will be surprising if Olowu has been practising jumping and heading. But at least they have got Mitchell to do some of their work and not have to leave it to Jones, who some people still think should be rehired, believing he will develop into a proper Goalkeeper. You would think that there are no other options!

Anyway, if we lose, the popular fall-guy will be McSheffery even though he has no option but to keep picking so many of the failed and failing signings of the Summer of 2021.

Burton have not conceded a goal in their last 4 games against 3 very well placed teams, beating the rapidly-declining Millers last time out. However their recent away record is pretty bad with 4 successive losses before a 0-0 at Accrington.

I'll say 0-0 after duly rejecting 18-0.

Joe Wright isn't a Rovers player. Not sure what his current fitness is but if Rovers did want him he would be a new signing

I noted Clayton’s value and work-rate after watching him last week. You know what I think of Bostock. He may look good for even 50% of the time, but you cannot carry a player in his position who is so reluctant to challenge for the ball and so often just passes the ball to others to progress the play.

I couldn’t listen yesterday and have yet to see the highlights.

I fear the 'Dickov syndrome' where an improved performance every now and again masks the obvious failings for a few more weeks. ( Both manager and team) 🤔

Highlights now taken in and we defended as usual - rather badly with continuing failures to deal with balls in the air. They so remind me of junior school football defending; scarcely credible at this level.

Both Williams and Olowu are so slow to change direction and on occasions they seem to be marking
the same empty space.

Entirely agree the entire back 3 or 4 need replacing. Rowe is a bit of an enigma. Not really a wing back and not really a midfield player. Yet he's probably been head and shoulders our best player this season.

Graham Younger talentless identifier is gone. Its a step in the right direction. First good thing done by Copps I presume as its his responsibility now. Lets see who he appoints in his place

Copps came over quite well in his first HoFO interview. I don’t think that anyone would have had to ponder the suitability of the Recruitment Identifier very long to dismiss him and I would have wanted him expelled from the organisation before Christmas. There was talk of there being some sort of Committee that were also involved at least for the New Year recruits and that plus McSheffery’s input has improved the standard with the second wave of signings. But it has taken too long for them to get match-fit which should have been recognised in advance with a plan to deal with it and the people to implement it.

Getting the right recruits then keeping them fit was a very obvious failure under Wellens and it seems to me that the club organisation needs examination and probably change. Also good people should be able to work in any set up, so clearly a number of the back room/training staff need to be replaced. Much emphasis is placed on the attractive personalities of those who work behind the scenes and I wonder whether they are really actually good enough at their jobs. Perhaps the time has come for straight talking and some ruthless decision-making and Copps may well have to confront people he has known well for some time with unpalatable truths.

I suspect that GM’s seemingly kind approach may not have helped identify those who have perhaps been failing and Copps needs to be firmer in the way he operates to make up for that.

I might add that the injury rehabilitation record looks in dire need of examination, reform and re-staffing. Once injured at DRFC, your career is in jeopardy. Okenabirhie, Anderson, Wright, John, Close, Taylor have all been victims of that apparent failure and now we keep our fingers crossed for Rowe.

Well done Mooli for the second year in succession with Selby in hot pursuit and Nookie third - assuming that I have got it right for a change.

Perhaps some optimism will be generated off the pitch between now and the start of next season.

At least we seem financially viable which may not be the case throughout the EFL. Indeed, if there were clubs that had to fold there might well be some shuffling up in the pyramid.

Thanks for doing the sums all season Donaldo, you are again the driver of our page.👍
A horrible season where the writing was on the wall before the cooler weather came.😐
I don't feel confident that we have what it takes to be successful in the 4th division next term but will watch the close season comings and goings with great interest. We can hope!
I'll keep watching the forum page, have a great summer 606ers ⚽
