If the hierarchy really gives a fack…

…they’ll cancel the first team squad’s exhibitional jaunt to East Asia and Australia prior to next season’s domestic preseason fixtures.

Gratuitous, tone deaf, desperately commercial, and nothing but a hindrance to the technical and conditioning staff.

Would send a strong message to the players, fans and incoming staff about a new commitment to football over finances.

Surely every club does this though? Not that it’s ideal for preseason but it’s pretty much accepted that all clubs do it.

Its ideal for the balance sheet which is the most important thing now.

It's not as simple as you make out Rosso. You're likely going to be without CL football next season. A tour to the Far East would go someway to replacing the lost revenue from the group stage TV money. That might be the difference between the wages/transfer fee amortisation of an additional player ETH wants, who in turn might be the difference between CL qualification and Europa League the next season.

I know Utd are a commercial juggernaut already but if you aim to compete with City in football terms then you have to maximise all income streams because legitimately or not that's what they are doing.

That focus on the “one or two big name players who will complete the puzzle” has been a huge part of the problem.

The biggest problems with this squad are wholesale: physical conditioning, mentality and mental preparedness, and incoherence. (The third of those will need more time to address, but the first two can be improved significantly between now and September.) The quality of individual players from a technical perspective is way down the list of issues, and any given individual brought in isn’t going to fix the structural and endemic issues that have arisen from the mismanagement of the squad.

There are certain individuals who will have to leave, and a bunch of new players need to be brought in over the next few windows. A little of that will happen this summer, but it’s also important to try not to force recruitment in a rush and as a result of doing so, bodge the job again completely in desperation.

Far more important right now is dealing with the members of the squad already there who will be staying and getting them as up to speed as is absolutely possible physically in terms of conditioning and fitness (currently a joke), with Ten Hag’s tactical approach and requirements, with the new coaching regime, and in terms of psychology and mental preparedness for the new season.

Need every penny you can get to buy the best part of a new squad this summer so no chance it will be cancelled.

As frustrating as it is for the fans and potentially the new manager, you can understand the reasoning.

Money won’t fix the problems with the squad in one window.

You could throw two truly world class players into the mix and see them fail to qualify for the CL again next season unless the fundamental and deep-rooted issues with the squad - fitness, conditioning, mentality/mindset, tactical clarity and preparedness - are completely reset and rebuilt.

It should be up to Ten Hag.

Other teams like Liverpool, Chelsea and City seem to do that without canceling money spinning tours. United did these tours back when they were successful and it never stopped them achieving fitness and winning. So why now all of a sudden? The problems at United have nothing to do with this IMO.

Pep and Klopp aren’t starting where Ten Hag will be starting.

United regularly run the least distance in the PL. The squad isn’t nearly fit enough to play a pressing game; it’ll just collapse.

The dressing room has issues with egos which needs addressing, as well as a collective confidence crisis, which is a dire combination.

Tactically, they’ll be starting from scratch. Patterns of play - incredibly important to Ten Hag’s approach - will be brand new and need a huge amount of work.

It’s a complete reset that’ll be required; and it is going to need a huge, huge amount of work in the gym, on the training ground, and in classroom instruction.

It goes both ways though. A trip to the other side (my side mwahaha) of the world helps the players and coaches bond and get to know each other. It’s a fun trip which I’m sure will have a good fitness element involved as well as a chance for the manager to work out who is going to respond well to his methods
