Top 20 most expensive transfers of all time

It’s amazing how many of these haven’t worked and a warning to be cautious in going for the likes of Kane or Rice who would most probably make this list. From looking at the below there’s probably only a handful of genuine successes here.

Ronaldo (Utd to Real) undoubtedly, VVD, Suarez, Neymar(Santos to Barca).

Bale to Real is probably a success given what’s he’s won but that turned sour. Mbappe is a success story on the pitch but if he leaves for free without a CL even that is debatable.

While there’s still time for some (Grealish, Sancho, Felix, even Lukaku) it just goes to show that clubs should be cautious of big money deals.

1 Neymar Barcelona - PSG 2017 €222m

=4 Philippe Coutinho Liverpool - Barcelona 2018 €120m (+€40m)
=4 Antoine Griezmann Atletico Madrid - Barcelona 2019 €120m

Still a terrible signing

When comparing Hazard to Maguire - at least you can understand why Madrid paid that amount to begin with. Absolutely no one outside of Edwards thought spending that much on Maguire was a good idea.

Baffling transfer

When you think about his career at United and you think, what were his stand out performances, what did he help us achieve, the top thing is that come back vs City when you stopped them winning the league for 1 game, then after that

While flops like "7 touches in 90 minutes" Lukaku are at another level, Pogba has failed to deliver for years and for £90m 6 years ago, that's a massive failing.

He hasn't been a great signing, but at the same time, he has averaged a goal or assist every 196 minutes for United. That isn't a bad return for a CM. Like I say, not a great signing, but there are a lot worse on that list.

1 Neymar Barcelona - PSG 2017 €222m - worked out but overpriced.
2 Kylian Mbappe Monaco - PSG 2017 €145m (+€35m) - worked out.
3 Joao Felix Benfica - Atletico Madrid 2019 €126m - working out but overpriced.
=4 Philippe Coutinho Liverpool - Barcelona 2018 €120m (+€40m) - Not sure what went wrong here, seemed to be decent when I watched him and stats weren't bad. Bought when one of the best in the world in midfield for Liverpool but shunted left when Dembele got injured.
=4 Antoine Griezmann Atletico Madrid - Barcelona 2019 €120m - Again not poor numbers but sold quickly after buying.
6 Jack Grealish Aston Villa - Manchester City 2021 €117m - Too early to judge.
7 Romelu Lukaku Inter - Chelsea 2021 €115m - too early to judge.
=8 Ousmane Dembele Borussia Dortmund - Barcelona 2017 €105m (+€45m) - decent but overpriced.
=8 Paul Pogba Juventus - Manchester United 2016 €105m - decent in spells, overpriced.
10 Gareth Bale Tottenham - Real Madrid 2013 €100.8m - worked out.
=11 Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid - Juventus 2018 €100m - worked out.
=11 Eden Hazard Chelsea - Real Madrid 2019 €100m (+€40m) - seems injuries have caused this one to fail.
13 Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United - Real Madrid 2009 €94m - worked out.
14 Gonzalo Higuain Napoli - Juventus 2016 €90m - worked out.
15 Harry Maguire Leicester City - Manchester United 2019 €87.1m -
16 Neymar Santos - Barcelona 2013 €86.2m - worked out.
17 Jadon Sancho Borussia Dortmund - Manchester United 2021 €85m - too early to judge.
18 Romelu Lukaku Everton - Manchester United 2017 €84.8m - decent numbers and not much of a loss.
19 Virgil van Dijk Southampton - Liverpool 2018 €84.5m - worked out.
20 Luis Suarez Liverpool - Barcelona 2014 €82.3m - worked out.

I'd say only one of these have been an absolute failure and that's Maguire.
