Is Ireland about to reunite?

In the coming years? Sinn Féin’s victory in the local elections makes it more likely than ever and imo about time. I come from a family of proud ‘British’ Norn Iron people so they’d mostly be spinning in their graves but mi madre has softened her stance after seeing the Northern Irish people betrayed by the Brexit vote so is for the first time in her life actually supporting a united Ireland (this is a woman who hated that give Ireland back to the Irish song by her hero Paul McCartney and banned us from playing his music for a while as kids 😹 )

Is it inevitable? Will a united Ireland be an economic powerhouse and lead to a far more prosperous future for the people there ? And another nail in the coffin for the Yoo Kay? And will Ireland now be the clear favourite to win the 2030 World Cup?

General question:

Why are the DUP such complete and utter facksticks?

Pathetic, petulant waaaankers seemingly determined to punish their own supporters - and the rest of NI - to literally nobody’s benefit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because they and all the other sides up north behave in the main like spoilt children IE I want I want and I’m not sharing

It’s more about oneupmanship than politics for the good of the people

Btw, Ten tins of Guinness for 8.99 in Carrickfergus Lidl...reasons to stay in UK🤣

Morning mate.

Yes, us nordies are spoilt and angry at times and need to learn to be more Donegal👍

At least the middle ground here is now 20 per cent, putting manners on us loons in the 40 per cent orange and 40 per cent green camps👍
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As said I’m not just blaming DUP, they are all as bad as each other. Like our shower down here

‘People who have a DUP elected rep in their constituency (they're your MLAs even if *you* didn't vote for them), what do you think they should be tackling first as their main priority?’

Fixing health service - 53.3%
Helping with energy costs - 43.3%
Protocol - 3.4%

But noooooo, Donaldson isn’t interested, is he? “Wobble wobble PROTOCOL wobble wobble EXISTENTIAL THREAT wobble wobble!”

Fack off Jeffrey. There’s be no Protocol to worry about if you dense fackers hadn’t propped the Tories up, would there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the run up to the election there were a number of studio debates with the party leaders. Donaldson had a mare. Whilst the other parties were focusing on energy costs, inflation, heath services etc he kept on and on about the NIP.

The DUP have done more to promote unity than any of the nationalist parties
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You would think that everything they’ve done since 2019 was actually carefully designed to undermine the union, distance NI from GB, and strengthen the argument for a reunited Ireland.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dup mess up so often and the more moderate UUP have been destroyed in recent years, like the SDLP, so the architects of the GFA are replaced by dup-Tuv and Sinn Fein....and significantly, cross community Alliance taking UUP and SDLP seats.

Problem for the dup is a right wing TUV now taking 6 per cent of their vote, so they have to decide which way to move, as going moderate effectively wiped out the UUP.

Like or loathe them, dup represent a section of unionism loyalism, and when folk do not back them, we get SF as top dogs, so it's a catch 22 for unionist loyalist voters?

Also, fair play to SF and Michelle for winning as they play politics so well, and their leader is not from Pira ranks, so a less toxic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good to see you about, tbab, and hope all is well with you and the fam

Also appreciate your view on proceedings. I’m not sure it’s possible to explain to those in NI how just bizarre and confused NI politics looks to those on the outside

Cheers chum, 👍..I have been on rangers and Chelsea threads mostly, but easing away from politics lol.

All good here and with the family, and hope the same at your end mate.

It is confusing for those in Ulster, nevermind outwith🤣

After decades of loyalist politics I have weaned masel away and only started looking at it all on TV when results were coming in, and my dup mate Lee Reynolds was on a BBC panel as a commentator.

Sitting in a Belfast car showroom reading John Kennedy Tools, A Confederacy of Dunces...so apt for me and NI😉

Not sure how those on GB have any chance of getting a grip on it in that case

True.

To give a little personal family background which may shed light on how we vote here, most of my family and my wife's family are now Alliance, and on either side ok with being in uk, both families quite anti- Dup too, but also not fans of Sinn Fein.

Mum and I would be the loyalist wing lol, but she is 88 and am 58 soon, so it is generational here too, with young folk not into orange and green in the same way.

Many here now regard themselves as Norn Iron, rather than Brits or Irish, although myself and mates are ok with being British and Irish, just to highlight how confusing we are lol.

I was Ulster independence from 85 to fairly recently, as London and Dublin fook us about, but realistically, indy here is insanity and we never got many votes.

Hope that clears things up 😜🤣

OP

I would get on with your madre, as would my madre 👍

Many unionists, including close friends, voted remain and were not brexit backers, but do not want a United Ireland...up to 40 per cent of unionists voted remain, just to confuse again lol.

The unionist and loyalist people do themselves no favours with our mentality and staunch stubborn ways, but like people everywhere, get to know us and we are not the demons often portrayed, or shown by some in dup ranks....years of terrorism and fear and negative representation has created a poor image and message, and unionist leaders did discriminate against Catholic nationalists, out of bigotry and fear, and this was reciprocated in the Irish Republic and nationalist majority areas in NI.

Hopefully, moderates prevail in all camps now and we focus on bread and butter issues, rather than flags and borders, and real unity willce gradually, just as Irish people in Britain became part of the nation, while keeping their identity.
