Best team domestically and in Europe

Only two sides in England have managed a season where they can be considered the best side in their country and continent.

Manchester United: 98/99, 07/08
Liverpool: 76/77, 83/84

When we are talking about the best teams in their era's, these are the sorts of sides that ultimately proved themselves.

2-2 as it stands, can Liverpool take the 3-2 lead this year or will they bottle it?

People undermine that 97pts and CL win from Liverpool. That's an exceptional season...just City were better
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a bit like us in 09/10/11 .... A great team getting to CL finals but just not quite enough to get past an amazing Barca team.

Will be nice to see what Fergie thinks about those years...because you get the feeling he never really took the CL thaaat seriously until the latter part of his career (this just could be a dumb assumption though) but the moment he really starts dominating, in terms of reaching finals consistently, he comes across one of the best sides the sport has ever seen. Utter madness

TBH on the 1990s. I think in general the english sides had fallen out of tune with the global game at that time when they came back in and really they had new managers, new players and the art of winning in europe to remaster.

It took a long time for utd to translate what worked domestically in 1992 to 1997 into something that worked in europe.

Same for arsenal btw. they never really got going as they were unseeded and took what 5? years to get out of groupos?

now we take these things for granted really. but you have to build the clubs and the player base to do it.

in the 2000s england was dominating by 2005 to 2009 or thereabouts with utd v chelsea final as evidence.

The standard dropped off again from 2010 to 2015 imo. we are in to a period of strong dominance now.

Utd were unfortunate that they had to contend with Barcelona in 09 and 11, otherwise they may have added to there two!

given city have already won the title this one can be put down to city barely avoiding a bottle job after having 14 point lead.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you bottle a 14 point lead when the other team has 2 games in hand. Secondly you only made up 7 points if you discount the 2 games in hand. City lost once and drew twice dropping 7 points. Hardly a collapse kind.

Hope they give you a trophy for the 7 points you made up. Oh wait it’s 5 now since you bottled 2 at the weekend.

Even Real Madrid have only done it once since the 50s (in 2016/17).

This is because we are a kindly, warm-hearted club. If we know we are going to win the CL, then we'll usually let someone else win the league. You should have reached the final against us, not the cold-hearted Catalans.

In 2014, it was obvious Atleti would fold in the CL final, so we dropped points in our games in hand and left it to them and Barça to decide the title winners on the final day.

Similar situation in 2016. Atleti could never beat us in the CL, so we handed Barça the league by a point.

2017 we had to deny Juventus because they were just winning everything and it wasn't fair. We'd also let Barça win a few too many leagues around those days and they were getting coqi, so they needed taking down a peg.

2018, peg taken down, the third successive CL was clearly in a much superior class to double or treble nonsense, so we didn't even bother with the league.

This year we're already league champions, so if Liverpool miss out on the PL we'll probably roll over for them. We'll make sure to look forlorn though, just to make sure they have an actual sense of achievement.

It’s bizarre that that 2011 team could have achieved that (though there was nothing close about that final - absolute demolition). United looked pretty average for a lot of that season.

But to do it in 2008 and then again in 2009 would have been some feat. That side had everything.

Yeah the 2011 side minus Ronaldo was not as good as the 08 and 09 one. Barca were probably peak Barca then as well.
