Jim Ratcliffe

Quite a bit of noise on social media that he may be considering a bid for United. I don't know how genuine these rumours are but maybe now wouldn't be a bad time for the Glazers to sell when there's a lot of investment required.

Do we hold out much hope for the Glazers actually selling?
Would Jim Ratcliffe be a good new owner?

I guess time will tell. If they were to sell at least it'd be a decent ending to a pretty poor season.

It's pure speculation unfortunately. Be amazing if he did though.

I would reckon the Glazers would sell to Radcliffe if he offered them £1B above what they themselves valued the club at. Like he did in his Chelsea bid.

Problem is that Ratcliffe has been quite vocal about how he wouldn't touch United with barge pole due to its post Fergie track record under the Glazer ownership/management model and the damage that has caused to its infrastructure and reputation.

Which is a bid daft if you think about it. That should be a reason for a new owner to come in and do much better.

Also is Ratcliffe really wealthy enough to take United where we want it? ie to compete with the likes of City and Newcastle in the future. It will take an oil rich Country and it's GDP to fund that kind of investment.

You would end up with his brother in charge, and he hasn't exactly set the world on fire in France or Switzerland.

It's on speculation and not happening anyway....but can it honestly get worse than the Glazers?

I struggle to share the enthusiasm for the idea of passing into the ownership of a different billionaire whose stewardship of the club *might* be more competent and financial objectives *might* be less aggressively extractive. At best it's a quantitative improvement, but it's still a situation where the supporters have no influence on what the club wants to be.

That's still better of course than being acquired by a petro-state in which case the purpose of the club is to generate good PR for authoritarian who prosper from fuelling climate change.

Well, Chelsea were sloppy seconds to Spurs re Abramovich. He looked into buying Spurs first.

You had a lucky escape there, with him lavishing money on them left right and centre, winning trophy after trophy, whilst your owner spent 20 years sailing around the Caribbean whilst planning how best to build a stadium around a cheese room.

I may be wrong but I'm kind of resigned to the fact that perhaps the best option will be 'the most palatable' billionaire.

It'd be great to have some fan ownership but I think that seems a fair way off at present. I have always thought though that perhaps David Beckham could have a say in a few years' time. I know he doesn't have the money himself but I'm sure his name and brand would be attractive enough, with the club name as well, for him to lead a consortium of buyers. I think being a figurehead for that may appeal to his ego (and I don't mean his ego in a negative way).
