A dissapointing season, but not a bad one.

Might as well re-title this article as the usual scouser biters are all over it

So the season started with a great deal of promise and I really thought that the signing of Lukaku would give us more of a goal scoring threat and therefore allow us to challenge for the title. Well that has proven to be incorrect.

Nothwitahstanding the failure of the club and Lukaku to make the signing work, there is no doubt that losing Chilwell, James and Kante fo so much of the season had a huge impact. Our WBs are key for us and Liverpool without TAA and Robinson for much of their season would have been similarly impacted.

However, despite the above, I still think in the league we should have achieved the 80 point mark this season and to be just a few points ahead of Spurs and Arsenal this season reflects poorly on our squad. That is why I am dissapointed.

But, a season can't be considered bad when we won the Super Cup, The WCW Cup, got to two domestic finals and the CL QF.

Next season is all about rebuilding the squad, and I think we have to be realistic that we are not going to be challenging for the title. We will also have to see what culture the new ownership brings in.

For me I just want the squad rebuilding to go well. If it does, the rest wil fall into place.

Can’t believe you didn’t mention Chelsea’s mental weakness.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well 7 pages of mostly nonsense, when everything you need to know is encapsulated in those 1st two comments. In the ensuing melee there's been some absolute drivel.

In an attempt to get your article back on track Biggish, if I may, I became concerned that this season would become derailed back in October when it was confirmed Chilwell would be out for the season, closely followed by James for a prolonged period.

For a team that play 3 at the back, in my opinion both wing backs are more crucial than to a team that play a flat back four and the midfield two need to be a strong pairing as more often than not they will be outnumbered in the middle.

To lose Chilwell for the season, James for a large portion of the it and best midfielder who's played about 40% of games left us at a huge disadvantage. With the wing backs we simply don't have the personnel to carry on with three at the back as far as I'm concerned, Alonso is ok going forward but a bit of a liability going the other way, whilst Dave, although a club legend, has his best years behind him.

Could we have countered that? Maybe played three in midfield and gone to a more compact back 4?

The front three and their inability to score important goals to kill games off is another whole story that I don't even know where to start.

I think the main thing to take from this season, is that our squad is not as good as some people would like you to believe.

Good post Brummie, and with hindsight i certainly overestimated our squad and Lukaku's impact

Lukaku is a conundrum Biggish, I don't necessarily think he's a bad player (not brilliant either) but more a question of us buying badly and investing in a player that doesn't suit our style of play.

Despite his size, I don't think he's a great aerial threat and our game tends to rely on to balls into the area from the flanks.

If you see him running on to balls played through the middle to him, he's a different player. I just don't think he's compatible to our current style of play!

I agree with the title of the thread.

At one point we were 7 points in front of 2nd place. Everything was looking hunky dory.

Losses of key personnel hurt us badly.

But it also highlighted a few things that perhaps me saying may upset.

Last season, we had big squad, but not necessarily a great squad. Reason I believe that? It only took the loss of 3 key players to pretty much derail our season.

But in spite of everything, we finished in 3rd place. And I do mean everything.

Obviously the loss of key personnel. But then there's the fact that some clubs were allowed postponements when they had depleted squads, whilst we were told

"You've got an under 9s team haven't you?"

Add to this off the field issues. I don't care what anyone says, that would have impacted the playing squad.

Lukaku? I joke and say he's rubbish, but I did correct myself on another platform a few weeks ago. He's a goalscorer in the right team, squad. At this time, I don't think we're right for him and vice versa. This is why I was always against his return.

To clarify my "not necessarily a great squad" comment, I mean in regard to strength in depth.
