Everyone’s Second Team v Wolves

An immortalising quadruple is now potentially only two games away for Liverpool, who kept their Premier League (PL) title dreams alive by beating Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday with a largely second-string XI. The Reds’ destiny is still out of their hands though, and they need favours from old friends like Aston Villa duo Phillipe Coutinho and Danny Ings over at the Etihad Stadium if they are to lift a joint-record 20th English title.

That aside, Liverpool’s midweek victory showed their desire to make history, as no PL team has earned more points after conceding first than the Merseysiders’ 17 this term. A similar display of resilience will see Liverpool at least keep their end of the title-hunt bargain, and their confidence should be sky-high as Jürgen Klopp’s men have won all of the last seven PL H2Hs.

As for Wolves, they’ve already secured a third top-ten finish in four PL seasons, despite going winless across their previous six games (D2, L4). On a particularly sour note, the latest of those was a truly disappointing 1-1 draw against long-doomed basement dwellers Norwich, which highlighted how their conservative approach can backfire.

However, Bruno Lage’s men can still be the spoilers in a potential title party at Anfield, as they are one of just five PL teams that have secured more points away (27) than at home (24) this season. They may well keep the tension going longer than expected too, as all of Wolves’ last five PL away games have seen a 0-0 half-time scoreline.

Players to watch: Liverpool will be hoping for some Diogo Jota magic to pull them through as they’ve never lost when the former Wolves man has made it onto the scoresheet (W24, D4). Meanwhile, Wolves’ current ace in the pack, Raúl Jiménez, has scored the match opener in five of his six PL goalscoring outings this campaign.

Hot stat: No team has won more PL home matches ‘to nil’ than Liverpool’s 12 this season.

Bless him Great Teams, he's a bit naive and has no real idea of football fans in this country or what it even means to be a football fan.

There are so many little turning points in a season. Who’s to say that if Everton had equalised, City wouldn’t have done straight down the other end and bagged a winner.

It is what it is.
