Did we undervalue Kalou?
Yes he was frustrating, yes he was probably at his best starting from the bench.
But was a part of our problem (with the player) that he had quite a few players in the same squad that had set the bar so high?
I always wanted better than Kalou as I felt his end product wasn't good enough at the time. But now I'd have him on this team's bench before a few of the players we have available now. He always seemed to play with a smile on his face and I didn't hear any stories about his ego or complaining.
With the benefit of hindsight.....

No.
Kalou was rated accordingly...nothing more than a squad filler figure, amongst a squad of superstars.
There were also plenty of times when voiced his discontent at the squad role he was permanently consigned to.

Kalou' versatility was a plus and detrimental at the same time for him.

I don't think so. He was OK but I wouldn't exactly be rushing him into the team now let alone back then. I think Schurrie was better, or had the potential to be better. Pulisic same.

I’ve always said Kalou in hindsight I feel was better than made out. Consistent seasons of at least double figure goals mostly as a squad player, in all comps. Frustrating style of play, yes, but worked hard, good movement and tricky on ball. The fact he continued to play in top 5 league regularly till 36 is a bit of a testament to his talent
