Jubilee

Is anyone here celebrating next week?

In our country only eight streets have applied for closures and typically mine is one of them. We weren't even consulted like was supposed to happen so I've submitted an objection after telling the organiser I'm a republican.

Everyone has the right to celebrate as they choose at home but I object to the street being closed.

Also, the street is going to be full of Union Jacks which doesn't even have my country represented on it!

What do the good people on here thing. Is it God Save The Queen or are you just not bothered?

We all know the important occasion next weekend is the World Cup play off anyway!

Jimmy Saville was a close friend of the monarch and was often invited to their Christmas dinners. He was a child trafficker.

What does that make the monarch?

Celebrating the Royal family is idiotic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes but like the rest of us they didnt know he was a pervert at the time. Unless you are saying they did?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly. Another idiot piece of reasoning by lemon. An apt name if ever there was one.

Is this one of those lateral thinking exercises?

Is the answer a block of ice?

Yes, they knew. That's why he was so close to them. There have been many whistle blowers from policeman to journalists exposing the monarchs dealing with child traffickers and paedophiles.

But the general public still wave their flags and sing their songs like the brainless drones they are.

If you don’t celebrate the queen (Charles is a khunt and when he becomes king I couldn’t care less) but if you don’t celebrate a legend like the queen and arguably the great person in history then you don’t deserve to be alive or to at least live in the U.K. tbh

Ok I'm not refuting what you've said but why would photo ID disenfranchise a million people?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Unlike many countries, we don't have mandatory photo ID in this country. As Rosso said, plenty of people don't have passports or driving licences. They are disproportionately represented in demographics that are poorer in cash and time. These same demographics are already less likely to vote due to barriers such as long working hours, less access to transportation, and less access to information.

The idea of requiring photo ID to vote has been studied and researched at length. Many of the estimates of the number marginalised people who are effectively disenfranchised by these moves are actually closer to two million. Meanwhile, election watchdogs repeatedly assess that electoral fraud occurs on a miniscule scale.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A provisional driving license is 34 pounds and takes about half an hour to apply for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You may very well see it that way but there is copious evidence from multiple countries that such policies have the effect of significantly suppressing voting numbers. That's why they are popular with governments which rely on discouraging political participation rather than governing in the interests of the majority. No one is seriously denying that this policy will result in significant numbers of people who previously voted not voting in the next election.

Haven't read the previous comments but I can assure you that they were having a massive joint celebration for the 100th anniversary of Norn Iron combined with Queenie's Jubilee in Belfast.

It made it very difficult for me to get a taxi to my mate's house for a BBQ. But at the same time, there is a lot of loyalty to the queen here and that loyalty makes many want to march. Whilst it's not something I overly care about, I'm glad they can get it out of their system in one big march. It happened today. Now celebrate in private in future guys, please

I know I shouldnt but I appreciate our Constitutional Monarchy over the alternative, which would be a disaster for all in this country. As would ending the Union. Imagine letting the generally thick people of the UK loose on voting for our head of state given half the chance. And handing everything to the Executive in the HofC. Youre having a laugh.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Many countries (e.g. Germany) have an elected head of state that has a purely ceremonial role. Strange to see an opinion that, in a system where a party with less than 40% support regularly gets an absolute majority, where the upper chamber consists of unelected Lords, and where electoral reforms to require photo ID are set to disenfranchise more than a million, largely poorer voters, you see too much democracy as a potential problem for the country.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it really that strange to read an opinion that suggests leaving things as they are right now regarding the status of the UK Constitutional Monarchy. You just need to get out more and meet more people and you will see it isn't that much of a strange opinion, after all.
