Just scored 5 goals (against Estonia). Not the strongest side ever but itβs not like anyone else has scored 5 against them as far as I know.
Legend of a player and for me the greatest of all time - maybe someone should do an article asking who was better out of he and Ronaldo. Could be a fresh debate to be had as Iβm not sure Iβve seen it on here before.

I'll stop short of calling one a GOAT but in terms of who the better player is it's simple and can be answered with 2 very easy questions:
Can Messi do what Ronaldo does on a pitch? Yes
Can Ronaldo do what Messi does on a pitch? No
----------------------------------------------------------------------
another way to put it is .... put messi's talent in ronaldos body and you get a better player than if you put Ronaldos talent into Messi's body.
the old saying if an artist was to create the perfect footballer it would be messi, if an engineer created the perfect footballer it would be Ronaldo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. Messi is the more complete footballer. There are some physical differences that mean Ronaldo might have more strength and be better at heading, but it doesn't feature that much. Messi at his best doesn't need to be good at heading when his feet can do all the talking.
Messi is the better player but the reason I would refrain from calling him the GOAT is because Ronaldo still has the fact he's scored more goals, and done it in numerous top leagues. Messi needs to show it more at PSG for a start.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronaldo is a striker though,, the fact that their scoring stats are being compared is a huge compliment to messi.
there is a reason why in these arguments that they only post goals scored and dont mention key passes or assists... cos then the argument is over!
the only fair comparison for the two is to compare the time spent in the same league at the same time. the same competition and players.
no idea who fares better?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronaldo didn't start off as a striker though. They both have developed into goal machines so I think it's a bit moot to talk about their positions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well messi has never been a striker tbf. even when he was up top he wasnt playing as a striker ... the term "false 9" was spawned from this. messi has been and inside forward or n10 his whole career
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both frequently get into positions to score. I don't see it as much of a handicap that one isn't playing as a striker to be honest. It's not as if one is playing as a striker and the other is back in defence. They have licence to get forward and attack.

so if messi was say born in Trinidad & Tobago it would be almost impossible for him to be the GOAT regardless of how good he is ?
—————————
Unfortunately yes, it would make it very difficult for him.
Pele is the man to beat and he won 2 World Cups (technically 3), so to compete with that resume would be difficult for someone playing for a minnow nation.
They’d have to win something like 10+ major leagues and 7+ CLs probably along with 8+ Golden Balls.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ok so now we have established that how good you are has nothing to if your the best or not.
best and success are not equal.
by this logic you think that Giroud/ Ozil are better than ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski. aye that makes sense

if you cant tell the difference between the positions and roles of each player and how that affects their game then there is no point going over this with you

Put them both together and they could only dream about being able to do half the things Maradona could do with a football
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well unless you asked Maradona to score more than 23 goals across all comps in a season. i mean you wont find Messi or Ronaldo scoring more than double the amount of Maradona's highest ever total (in a decent league) on the regular
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just scoring goals though isn’t it?
I’d rather be entertained and watch a player who has you on the edge of your seat, that a cog in a well oiled machine
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ok put the assist stats up also then........
argument lost.... cheers
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats stats stats, it’s boring
Like I said, entertainment
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yup when a guy cannot use stats and actual things that happened to win an argument turn to "opinion", every time! never mind what they actually did .. ill judge them on what I think they did
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good for you
I’m sure there were players with better “stats” than George Best back in his heyday too, I know who I’d rather watch

so to your argument. messi and maradona are almost clones off each other... both similar in stature, both similar in style, both left pegged, both no 10s.
people are happy to accept the above comparisons but neglect the one that shows 844 games - 694 (messi) goals, 589 - 310 goals Maradona with half of those goals coming whilst playing in argentina.
so they both did very similar things on the pitch the both dribbled and showed flair well beyond other players... only messi did it more often.
listen Maradona is my favourite player, he was playing a game of the modern era and got kicked all over the shot whilst at it, as does messi just not to the same extent. just cos he was my favourite doesnt make him better, no way. what they actually did on the pitch determines that and messi did it more often than maradona , regardless of the reasons behind it.
the argument was not who your favourite it was who was better. and all the evidence says messi was better

Nah, Maradona was, quite a bit better too

Different eras too, Maradona did all that on potato fields while being kicked from pillar to post
Messi on bowling greens where tackling is not allowed, of course he’s going to play more games and score more goals

The Maradona choice is for the romantics out there. Cold hard facts show he was nowhere near.

Could be some nostalgia here.
I’ve got Maradona 4th on my list. The numbers just don’t stack up. May have been different if he’d won that 1990 WC as well though.
