Joe Gelhardt

Nominated for the golden boy award.

https://www.90min.com/posts/golden-boy-2022-confirmed-nominees

I know it's a naff title for an award, I had never heard of it until yesterday but there have been some talented winners over the years.

I doubt he will even get through to the next round of voting but he is one of only three English players to make the long-list (Bellingham and Harvey Elliott are the other 2) and one of only 11 nominations from English based clubs.

Well done Joffy

Well done Joe Gelhardt.

Was surprised not to see Saka on the list. He’s 20 and had a pretty season by all accounts.

Which is a pertinent point. It shows that clubs higher up aren’t afraid of playing their young talent in the Premier League, albeit that those lads have the advantage of playing with Champions League class players around them, which often shows them off in a better light often.

It’s hard for kids to dictate or control games in weaker teams. But Marsch shouldn’t be afraid of laying them. The players he’s bringing in are only here because they were given the opportunity to play in the first place.

Regarding Kalvin, he could be the latest player we get to see if that is true should he move to Man City:

With respect, I have a gut feeling Leeds are offering nowhere near an attractive enough salary to Phillips to make it worth his while signing a new contract. We should note what happened last year with Alioski and the consequences. It appears to be a way of pushing players out of the door taking the cash and seeing Orta and Co. taking speculative punts on cheap players. Truth is, the owners are too skint to run a Premier League club of our size; even the 49s don’t seem to have enough interest to make the necessary.
By August we’ll have some indication of net spending and what realistic investment is actually being put into the playing staff. I want to be wrong, but I don’t get a good feeling here.

A sideways glance at Villa and how they went about

their 3rd season back in the Premier Leaguie is a guide. Expensive players aren’t a guarantee, but all the cogs have to be there to bring success.

I have my view about the last few months and even the signings we have seen this Summer.

This is all about Jesse Marsch now. Personally, I think the board has taken a huge risk with Marsch and that Marsch is taking a huge risk with bringing in completely new players to play his style of football in a League he may well not be prepared for. Possibly we could get a ‘new system’ bounce as we saw with Bielsa, but the other teams will soon pick up in this. They’re already familiar with some of the weaknesses in the game of some of our players; tracking back, lack of speed, inability to carry the ball etc. etc.

It’s going to be make or break by Christmas for Marsch; the problem is, if it’s break, we’re again going to be already heavily loaded with a specific system and style of play. and a load of players brought in by Marsch on long contracts who might not suited to the style of his replacement.

I know this post was originally about Joe Geldhardt, I really hope Marsch realises the benefit these young players could bring.

With Drameh back I would have rather seen a Left back recruited given Firpo’s limited effectiveness. He has the feel of another Tyler Roberts; a player persisted with over.and over but never delivering anywhere near the standard required.

I’m guessing now, it’s time to sit back for 6 weeks and see how the transfer window pans out. But yes, I don’t think we’re going to see any new money in players this summer.

Either the 49ers have money…..or they don’t.

For example, selling payers to upgrade the stadium wouldn’t wash with me; certainly not the way the Premier League is now.

Excellent comments, Real Estate, should be a thread of its own. I think the board were caught between a rock and a hard place in February. We were going down with Bielsa, or we could try something new. We were already looking at Marsch and the Red Bull philosophy. It works with other clubs around the world, but it requires systemic change in how the team plays, and the personnel required to execute the game plan. A lot of us look back nostalgically on the Bielsa years, but we got out by the skin of our teeth and we have a clean slate. We have good financials and assets to manage. Such a difference from the Bates era. No, it' snot perfect, but we are committed to change, so we should bite the bullet and get on with it.
One thing is for sure, it won't be dull. It never is with LUFC.

The thing with Bielsa is that he has the brain to adapated and certainly the capability. I have a hunch that he could have been as good as Pep had he been more flexible.

For me, his setup, style and tactics became just far too easy for other teams to predict, confident of exactly what they were going to get.

Seeing that his approach didn’t work, Bielsa should have accepted that this I was one of his misjudgements, and with the clear coaching capability that he had in his repertoire coached the players to adapt or set up differently.

We saw this with Marsch during the run in; just imagine had Bielsa been in charge and done this while he was in charge.

It’s water under the bridge now, and nine of the above will ever change the gratitude all of us as Leeds fans will feel for his dedication to the clubs over almost 4 years and the pleasure and pride it brought being a Leeds fan.

The Golden Boy is for teenagers, so that's why Saka won't have been nominated. He won't have been in his teens at whenever the cutoff date is.

They also longlist basically every player in their teens who plays regular games at a good standard, so an honour, but not entirely unexpected.
