2021 Census results

The census results are out for 2021. There’s a good thread below from the ONS detailing the changes to England and Wales from 2011.

Main highlights:

1. The usual resident population in England and Wales was 59,597,300 (56,489,800 in England and 3,107,500 in Wales) when the census took place on 21 March 2021. This was the largest population recorded through a census for both countries.

2. In England, the population grew by almost 3.5 million (6.6%) from the 2011 Census. The rate of growth was considerably lower in Wales, where the population grew by 44,000 (1.4%)

3. There were more people than ever before in the older age groups in England and Wales. The percentage of the population who were aged 65 years and over was 18.6% (16.4% in 2011)

I read a stat a few months ago that said more people lived in Ireland prior to the potato famine in 1845 than lives there now. That’s mad, if it’s right.

It’s true. The population was near 8 million then. Albeit the whole country. It has never fully recovered. It’s known as Ireland’s Holocaust

I think the article I read was discussing whether it was a famine or genocide.

The genocide point is levelled at the then UK government for their handling of the crisis

Be interesting to see the results for demographic change as well. I bet there will be a rise in the Syrian and Afghan figures especially in London.

Cant see them reporting on religion / natipnality as it could be quite divisive

Thought that's the point of the census?

The use of Census data is a massive part of my job and this year in Scotland stupid people refused to complete their online form due to them thinking the government are wanting to know information about them. That's literally the point of the census and has been for over 200 years.

Quote: "It says it is to determine whether or not my neighbourhood needs a school or not, but it didn't include any questions about whether I think my neighbourhood needs a school or not".

There genuinely needs to be a cull.

Isn’t it a legal requirement to fill it out?

It is. But what can you do when a large proportion of the population are total monngos? They will be the first to complain that a larger population than before identified as something or reported that they cycled instead of drive etc.

THIS ISN'T REPRESENTITIVE OF THE POPULATION, they scream. After not completing it.

There needs to be a black mirror episode based on this.
