McTominay

Reports today from Paul Hirst that we turned down an approach from Newcastle and another PL club for McTominay.

Right decision or an opportunity missed to cash in?

I imagine the Ten Hag doesn't want, or isn't allowed to completely change his midfield.

In the past, he has played two 6s, which is how we set up with McFred... but will probably look to see if either Fred or McT form a partnership with FDJ. If it fails, I expect another CM next summer.

There are about six positions in serious need of strengthening. One is CM, and FdJ is, it seems, going to help out there.

But the squad isn’t going to be made any stronger by selling off another CM, and I’d expect all options barring Pereira will now remain before at least two are brought in.

Otherwise, all of a sudden, CM becomes a crisis in waiting in terms of cover, and required focus elsewhere is lost. It’d also put the club in a totally shiiiit negotiating position, including with Barca if that isn’t concluded yet, if selling clubs looking in were to see that United only had three senior CMs able to play at six.

If United can bring in FdJ and one other quality option to play at six, by all means, then let one of Fred or McT go (I assume VdB will stay regardless).

‘Reports’ are suggesting that ETH sees McT as a “key” and “pivotal” player in any case.

When a club comes in and actually offers money for a player like him (not awful but no where near good enough for your aspirations) then you've gotta take it.

I assume he's probably already on the sort of wages that would put most other clubs off so down the line you may want rid but have no takers
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lowest in the 1st team apparently £20-30k a week

Say someone comes in with an offer of £20m, which is accepted.

Then you’ve got the question of how you replace him, with transfer fee, signing and agents’ fees, and wages totalling £25m over the next three years (considering the remaining time on his contract).

As soon as you’re paying a player £100k per week over five years, you’re down to £0 to spend.

Fred and VDB are both reportedly being paid four to five times as much as McT.

Yeah fair enough, I assumed he was already on big big money. No harm keeping hold of him for the season and seeing if ten Haag can get a tune out of him

He should keep value fairly well on those wages

Or at the very, very least wait until some midfield signings are made.

Never mind De Jominay - I’ve had a feeling for a while that McFred will start the first PL game. Plus ça change…

The tightening home-grown players rule could be a factor in keeping McT. Squad size is a maximum of 25 players (not-including under-21s) and you can have a maximum of 17 non-home-grown players. At the moment United are okay with 9 home-growns in the senior squad. However, if you consider that you need at least 8 to register a full squad of 25, and there may be other outgoings, we may not have that much room for manoeuvre.

Yeah, I’d thought that too.

Homegrown players gone/probably leaving include Pogba, Lingard, Jones, Pereira, Grant, Greenwood, Heaton? and Henderson? Left will be Maguire, Rashford, Shaw, Sancho, McTominay and Garner. I think that’s it

Elanga, Mengi, Laird, Amad and Shoretire will still be U21 and won’t need registering.
