If only Poch had been backed like this…

posted on 1/7/22

I can see potch back at spurs when conte inevitably throws a fit and leaves. Never seen such a good manager last such a small period of time, on average, at his clubs.

I guess it's just his style. When it gets stale or funds stop being available he kinda looks for a new project. If potch gets same backing I think he'd do really well.

I'd say potchs best team was head and shoulders above what's there now and he could do it again. Only so much Conte can do in a season or two but long term, with backing, I think potch will come back and do well.

Spot on Ace

I was right in what I said

i'll always love Poch for what he did with us

He gave us a team that played great football and one we could be proud of

Levy knows he has to back Antonio and he is doing that

I think Antonio loves what he's got with us

The Arsenal game made me realize why i buy a season ticket as the atmosphere was unreal and spanking them was magic.

lots of mugs on here who never go to their own clubs ground let alone ours are negative about our ground but they know fack all.

Levy got it spot on with the build and it will pay for itself in time.

I watched the game the next day and Neville and Tyler said the atmosphere was amazing and loud which it was.

I missed the old White Hart Lane for a bit because i had years of memories there but time moves on.

Hopefully Conte moves us forward.

Poch chose not to spend money, the summer we didn't sign any one he only wanted Frenkie de Jong, but he told us to sod off.

You do have a point however (to play devils ad) conte has a proven track record. His title win with chelsea is amongst the most impressive (bar maybe Leicester) for the team he had imo

Conte was brilliant for you Nick

i think u lost to Arsenal and Conte changed the system and you got win after win

we were brilliant under Poch that season and if you hadn't been so prolific i think we would have won the league.

Hope you're all good son.

Yep, had everyone pulling in the same direction and had people like Marcus alonso and victor moses playing out their skin, top manager.

That was the summer Poch was talking about Spurs 'being brave' in the transfer market right?

My interpretation is that Poch wanted top class players and wouldn't accept being fobbed off with lesser players that he would then get blamed for signing when they turned out to be crap.

Chelsea, with no European football, won ten consecutive PL games that autumn while everyone else was playing twice a week. From the Xmas run-in onwards we were the best team, beating them 2-0 at WHL, accruing the most points from Xmas onwards, scoring the most goals in the league and conceding the fewest (86 points and a GD of +60). There is absolutely no question we’d have been worthy champions that season but he couldn’t quite overhaul the marker Chelsea put down earlier in the season.

86 points isn’t far off what City/Liverpool have been doing, and incredible for what Poch had spent at that point (next to nothing), but we never got lauded as amazing runners up like Liverpool do, just trophy dodgers.

Yep that would have been our year. Apart from a freakishly good season for Chelsea. Remember us dropping just 4 points at home all season, and the 86 point would have been good enough in something like 7 out of the previous 15 years.
End of that season (16/17 ) was the time for Levy to invest, but chose to do nothing and our opportunity was gone. I am sure he has privately regretted that since.
As for Liverpool, I have never seen a club claim so many times to be "joint" top, when the table clearly shows them as second. Or have "won" the golden boot when clearly the records show it was shared with someone else.

The Saltypudlians are all about honours and accolades, it is why the majority if them jumped on the Varpool band wagon in the first place, despite living in places like Bristol etc. It is a particular type of person that follows a football team for those pathetic reasons.

Such a shame, regarding Poch…

We only needed one more top class forward & we would have won the league. Too many draws… A Bale on loan at that time, would have guaranteed it, for sure.

We only had Chadli, to be our game changer from the bench.

We had the best defence & midfield at the time, too…

Levy had one eye on the stadium rebuild at the time!
