Wayne Rooney

Not sure if it's true or not but apparently the Telegraph are reporting that he's being investigated by the FA for secretly paying the wages of his players and the staff for the month of May.

We all know the difficult financial situation that Derby County FC have been in for a while and it's actually sad that Rooney has to pay his players out of his own pocket.

Unfortunately the FA have to investigate because laws are there to be obeyed but it's also one of those many instances when the authorities literally look like thieves.

The government of course will always want a piece of the pie through taxes and when people get paid out of pockets they don't like it.

Fair enough it's the law , but still doesn't change the fact that it's theft.

As long as the players pay tax on the money they received there won't be a problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope. The employer has to pay tax also on the money they pay out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rooney is not their employer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This.

There's a good chance that the players are also self employed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------So why do they sign contracts?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So they know their terms and conditions and how much they're going to be paid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that you've just'd yourself bud.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to reiterate, you think footballers are on the PAYE system and self employed people don't sign contracts?

Was his Agent who had links to prospective owner Kirschner. So was probably paying on behalf of Kirschner.

Either way no gong to do with Rooney

Nothing *

Although I don’t doubt Rooney is the sort of person that would do that. Excellent manager and excellent person

All footballers pay from clubs is subject to Paye and NI.

Well, their contracted wage. It’s why they try and negotiate image rights more as they get taxed less for that.

Subject to Income Tax and NI but I doubt any work on a PAYE basis.

They all legally have to for their contracted salary, if they don’t it’s in breach of the FA rules.

There’s ways they try to get around it still.

Well yes, as explained on the linked 'Taxscout' website. They presumably set-up a limited company for their 'image rights' and pay 19% corporation tax on the profits of that business.

HMRC may have something to say if all the revenue into this limited company comes form one (or a very few) source(s), however!

The only problem is some then get greedy and start 'offshoring' the business profits in an attempt to pay no tax at all.

Yes I said about image rights too. That tends to actually be an issue more in the lower leagues, at least in terms of payments.
