Barcelona - shameless

So they’ve just presented Raphinha despite not being able to register him or any of their free transfers. Their registration is dependent on other players - such as De Jong - leaving.

How are they allowed to operate like this and why are players still happy to join them when there’s no guarantee they’ll be registered to play? How can La Liga allow them to spend the money they don’t have to complete these transfers when they’re miles over their salary limit?

I genuinely hope they go bust. Horrible, horrible club.

La Liga can’t stop them signing players. But they can stop them registering players, and here we are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They should be able to stop them signing them. It’s the signing that costs money, not the registering.

I don’t know it they legally can. The clubs are transferring the registration of the players. It’s then for the clubs to register them with the league. It’s like transfer bans, they aren’t actually bans on transferring registrations but on registering them with the league - this is why Atleti could sign Costa but had to wait to register him.

Whodunnit, I'll try to spell it out. If you look at the OP and what United fans are actually commenting on, it's not 'Barcelona's debt', but their financial mismanagement: the fact that their expenditure has catastrophically surpassed revenues to the extent that they have to take extreme remedial measures to be able to continue to function as a club, yet they continue to attempt to sign and register expensive new players. Debt is one of the symptoms of this deficit but it's not the notable feature.

By contrast, United's debt was loaded onto the club *by design* following the Glazers' leveraged takeover. Every one of us hates that they did it, and most of us are deeply critical of the way they have leached wealth from the business ever since, while proving to be poor stewards of the FC. However, on a basic balance sheet level it has been prudently run, never indulging in reckless or unsustainable expenditure.

Now that you understand the basis of this conversation, perhaps you will cease to think you have such an amusing 'gotcha' with the fact that both clubs carry debt.

Why is debt sustainable?

Cash-flow propagation;
By extension, liquidity health maintenance;
Tax advantageous;
No dilution of ownership/control (a la equity);
Infinitely 'Safer' from the perspective of cyber crime;
Appreciation of the "real value" of money.

When does it become unsustainable?

Poor/low interest cover;
Highly geared;
Insolvency;
Defaults/illiquidity in the instance of poor cash-flow management;
Credit rating impact thereof

The guy has gone and made his own thread about United's '771m' debt...

Just this should be enough. Financial mismanagement is about the only type we haven’t given a proper go yet.

so just to get this clear the supporter of a club that is over HALF A BILLION in debt is complaining about another team spending money they dont have .... hmmmm !!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We’ve not been barred by the premier league from registering players or given a negative salary limit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
thats a different argument im bringing up the point of them spending money they dont have
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We do have the money. We’re spending within our limits and means. As much as the debt - and our owners - is something we’d rather be without, it’s easily serviceable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not much different to a mortgage really. I have a mortgage but still spend on things for the house/food/clothes etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, but can you register new players?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've recently registered a new fridge!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I assume you’ll be making it club captain.
