Club Captaincy is a smokescreen

In SAF's first title winning squad, Bryan Robson was the club captain but hardly got a game.

I actually don't think that retaining Maguire as club captain solidifies his position in the starting lineup. Sure he'll get games, and if he returns to form, he'll get lots of games but those who think that ETH has some how hamstrung his defensive options by retaining Maguire as captain are mistaken. In fact, removing the captaincy from him before a match had been played and before he'd really got to know the characters might have caused more angst.

Stripping Maguire of the captaincy at this time with the resulting media furore would be counter productive.

What's happened to his Greek trial?

Olympiakos cancelled it.

I agree. I think ETH has probably done the sensible thing here - stripping him of captaincy would probably have caused more problems in the squad than it solved.

I do however think Maguire is pretty certain to start most games - if nothing else, due to Varane's inability to stay fit.

I just think it’s as simple as him liking Maguire. I’m sure he’ll get to know the real Maguire in the next few months but one thing I’ve learnt over the years is there’s a real disconnect between how us fans see things and how managers see them (like how popular McFred was for so long).

You need 5-6 captains to win a title.

And one or two cliche's.

I think ETH has done the right thing. He hasn’t created a needless story. I think Maguire will start the season in the side but with the addition of Martinez I can see him being dropped if he’s not playing well.

Yeah this is very true. I’m not a fan of Maguire, but I recognise that he’s highly rated within football - far more than fans rate him. He’s a much better player than he showed us last season as well. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start the majority of our games at the back.
