Dear departed

I hope you don’t mind if I share some memories of my very good friend, Aine, who passed away two weeks ago. When I lived in Leeds in the 1980’s, she was my partner, cheering on the Whites as they floundered in the old second division, often leading the line in singing M O T, and that old favourite, ‘You’re going home in a Yorkshire ambulance.’ She also stood up to the NF supporters selling their wares outside the ground. It’s a small miracle the ambulance wasn’t called for us.
She was with me at ER when we got promotion under Wilkinson, and when we won the first division. Most weeks during the seasons since then, I called her after our games, usually around 5.00 a.m New Zealand time, and we sang MOT on the phone for the last time, celebrating our escape at Brentford. We remained friends right until the end when I was fortunate enough to be able to say goodbye to her in person at her home in Leeds.
May you Rest In Peace, Aine, thank you for being there for me.
Perhaps, for those of us who have lost loved ones, we can share our memories here, ahead of the new season?
Thanks for your time,
David.

Incredible how we can connect with people over LUFC
and football. You and Aine especially. May she rest in
peace. And thank you for sharing your relationship.

Cheers mate.

Els, Batty, Jonty, Lorra, Elland and Mont, thanks for being so understanding and supportive. I have been a bit of a wreck since getting back from the UK and Ireland. Lorra, I am Irish, so I brought back plenty of salt to rub into the wounds of my Kiwi colleagues and friends. The nation is in mourning after losing the rugby series to Ireland. You guys are very understanding and I appreciate it. Aine was LUFC through and through and would share a roll-up with all of you.

That was a really touching tribute to your friend - sounds like you lost a good 'un.

You did her proud and it's a good memory that you had the opportunity to celebrate the team with her after her last matchday game.

A lovely tribute to your long time friend, you have done her proud.
Was thinking there was a strong Irish connection when I saw her name.

Thanks, Elland, I have done that. I also asked them to play Carole King's 'You've got a friend" and I got this reply: 'Thanks for the email, I have passed it on but there are matchday protocols so not sure this will be able to go ahead.' Some people have no sense of humour
