De Jong, Rabiot, Arnautovic

Just listening to David Ornstein, Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten on a couple of The Athletic’s podcasts this afternoon:

- United are still “actively working" on De Jong and believe there’s a strong chance he’ll join before deadline day.

- Rabiot isn’t a knee-jerk reaction, and isn’t considered an alternative to De Jong. He has been actively tracked for an extended period, and if the club decides to further their interest and manages to get the deal done, it will continue to pursue De Jong.

- Arnautovic also wasn’t any kind of knee-jerk response to the Brighton defeat. The new management team is concerned about a lack of physicality across the front line and was considering him as a Plan B-type impact sub who could “put it about a bit more".

There was also an interesting discussion about recommendations the much maligned United scouting team has made over the last few years which weren’t pursued by the hierarchy. These include (mentioned after discussion of the weekend’s game) Moises Caicedo, Grealish early in his Villa career, Haaland at Molde before he went to RB Salzburg, João Cancelo, Ruben Dias and others.

At least a partial answer to the repeatedly-asked question ‘What does the United scouting team actually do?’ seems to be identify and recommend players which the transfer team chooses not to chase.

Imagine wanting a physical striker and not going balls deep on a Mitrovic deal.

You’re gonna keep flogging this Mitrovic thing aren’t you?

Yes. Yes I am. I know you think Tony khan wouldn’t sell but everyone’s got a price

That’s not always true. Especially when we would need to sign him as a first choice striker. That isn’t happening because Ronaldo is staying.

For what it’s worth I’d sign Mitrovic to start at the club. But it’s just not going to happen, no matter how many times you repeat in ja606.

At least Culer has gone. Though I did filter him so maybe he’s still here. Haven’t seen too many ‘filtered’ bars however so who knows

I’m a big fan of Culer’s work.
