Not that it matters, but the timing of Gnonto's signing makes wonder if we were hoping to sign 2 strikers on deadline day.
The day began with an attempt to sign Gapko only for PSV to say he's not for sale. The spotlight falls onto Dieng and we all know how that played out.
Suddenly, the clock is winding down and our reliable journalists are throwing names about like confetti. Then, as if by magic, minutes before the window closes, Gnonto is at Elland Road signing a 5 year deal. You would think that a medical had taken place prior to the signing.
Gnonto was being linked with us several days ago but it all went quiet to the point where the player was all but forgotten about.
I can't imagine that we waited until the Dieng deal went belly-up before approaching Gnonto. An agreement for the transfer would need to be in place. Factor in a tea-time flight from Zurich and a medical, and a signing before 11pm seems a bit of a tall order.
Perhaps Gnonto was always going to happen on the day as a "young" signing, with the addition of a more experienced striker as a bonus, if it came off.
JM said Gnonto is not PL ready, so there's work to be done there. AR said they're still working on Gapko - a January window possibility?
Whatever, in the end we have our striker which is what counts, but it's just the timing of everything that makes me wonder about what was really going on behind the scenes. High drama and a rabbit pulled out of the hat at the death with AR and co coming out of it smelling fragrantly? He must have known, especially as personal terms had allegedly already been agreed.
As with Sinisterra, it just shows that the snouts don't always know it all.
I'm probably over-analysing unnecessarily, but it did make think - wow, that was fast all things considered.
Whatever the truth, good luck to the lad and hope he does well and his career flourishes with us.

Were we after two?

Amen to that.

I hear you. We were probably always going to sign him as a under 21s/first team bench player and now after the fiasco earlier in the day have repackaged this as an alternative senior signing. Anyway you never know he might make a big impact. We certainly have a young squad now.

I hope he does well, I bet you he goes out on loan next season or season after.

Another youth signing. Won’t make it as a striker at any level in England. Let’s hope he fits in somewhere if he makes it to the first team.

Was linked to him weeks ago, suprised it took so long.

Good post. Yes, the recruitment of Gnonto must have been under way for some or the club wouldn't have been able to register him, which I believe they have. When was the medical, for example? Whether he was recruited as a future prospect is not certain as he has already been selected four times by Roberto Mancini for international duty with ITALY!
Welcome to our great club, Wilfried Gnonto!
You never know, he might surprise us all very pleasantly!
