Conclusions from our transfer window

Now that we can draw breath from our transfer window, how do you think we have done? In my view, the trade off for Raph and KP looks like a good one. However, we failed to add to the first team in critical areas, notably up front, but also in defence.
Why do we always seem to find ourselves in this charade at the end of the transfer window? I think we are not as attractive an option as we think we are. Our players work harder, get more injuries and have a lower resale value than with other teams (Raph and KP apart). On top of this, I don’t think Marsch has enough credibility to attract proven players in the way Bielsa did.
Interestingly, we have been able to bring in Adams and Aaronson, who were not widely known until they arrived at Leeds, while Sinisterra and Rocca look promising. Marsch has got a clear idea of the players he wants and so far, his calls have been good ones. Rasmus is having some teething problems, but I think there is a decent footballer there. All of his players play intelligently and my guess is that Marsch felt that DJ just didn’t understand what he was being asked to do, and wasn’t going to learn fast enough.
As for Orta, Radz and Kinnear, they just can’t help themselves, can they? They whip up mass hysteria about CDK and then do a u-turn, before moving for Gakpo and Dieng and Whang, though I am relieved we missed out on the latter. It looked like a circus and the way we dumped DJ was as public a shaming as you could get, for someone who had played his heart out for us. That performance will not sit well with players and agents for the future; I think we will struggle to attract proven Premier League players while we act like amateurs in the market.
On the broader canvas, though, our move into the American market suggests that the takeover by the 49er’s is going to happen sooner rather than later, and I think Marsch will be looking to recruit from the MLS in the January window. Kai Wagner looks like he will be joining us and I would not be surprised if we bring in a couple more with a US background. Interest in LUFC is now massive Stateside and you begin to wonder why other clubs have not been as active there, when you see the quality of players they produce, and the potential of tapping that market.
All in all, then, I think we are a better team after this window, and perhaps it is time we acknowledged the excellent job Marsch is doing.

Hmm.

Our main striker is injury-prone (and getting on a bit); our second main striker is inconsistent (and getting on a bit); our third choice main striker is still finding his way. I'd imagine all the young strikers at the club are going to be pushing themselves to compete with Gelhardt, which will be good for him and for the club.

Maybe Greenwood can't get a lot of game-time. because, like James, he hasn't yet shown himself to be good enough at this level?

Would a short-term journeyman be prepared to do the pressing up front? Rodrigo is not particularly good at this?

The new players are all young and still finding their feet in the PL, remember - I think you're being way too critical in your assessment. They've only played six competitive games together so far.

It's worth remembering that we haven't been taken to the cleaners by anyone this season yet and indeed we've made a pretty good start. Yes, we were outsmarted and outplayed by Potter's Brighton, but they really are a well-organised team. I thought our performance improved for Everton even though we didn't take all three points.

I don't really accept your final comment either, with regard to "what we're being told" about the club's progress this season. We avoided relegation in the last minute of the last day of last season having shipped more goals than anyone except Norwich (and with more yellows than anyone.) We currently have eight points from the first five which is a huge improvement on last season's start.

I may well be wrong on all that but despite all the nonsense last week, despite the fact that we didn't sign a dedicated LB, I think we've had a pretty good window.
We held on to Harrison, Meslier and Klich and shed some dead weight. And Gnonto might just surprise us very pleasantly after all?

I don't think the squad is as thin as last season. Yeah we are short at lb but other areas we have more cover than last season

I think Chelsea result changes everything.

Did we really expect 3 goals and 3 points?

Look at our record v top teams.

And remember this is a very poor Chelsea this season.

Take that 3 points away and we’re 5 points ftt try on 5 games.

It’s the impotence against the Brighton’s and Everton’s that worries me along with our lack of shots on target, yet we’re told we’re getting better each week, if anything not progressed each week since Chelsea..

How have we done in the window...

Was pleased that we did business early and completely support manager going back for players he knows.

The questions are:

Are these players of right quality for this league
Are they what we need
How do they affect the morale in squad, Klich for example
Have we addressed the issues we can all see

I'm not convinced these are all good enough for this league, Kristensen in particular gets left for dead time and time again. When I'm watching matches I have to ask myself is Roca playing? Same at times with Adams, I just dont see these as players that top half Prem sides would want. It's early days, so Adams and Roca doing ok, but not really more than that in my book.

Aaronson is interesting because he runs around like a headless chicken, it seems without a purpose or rfootball nous at times, but its an important part of teh tactics and it is effective at times but other times it does look a bit Sunday league.

I think there is clearly a gap between the level these players were playing at and it will take some time.

As for Gyabi and Perkins, as Ive said for many a year, I think we focus far too much on imports for younger groups and it takes away focus for first team players and here we are at end of window still without a LB and still without a striker to challenge Rodrigo and Bamford, unless the farcical last minute fiasco signing of Gnonto proves to be a revelation.

No disrespect to Gnonto, its the shambles of CDK etc and last minute deadline day and announcing players who dont actually sign that make us a laughing stock.

It was embarrassing with badge a few years back, embarrassing every window we dont sign someone, embarrassing with JKA and these owners are continually doing this to us.

Marsch doesnt have teh credibility yet to attract big names, Bielsa did, but we didnt sign and big names, Raphinha became a big name under Bielsa.

Are we an attractive club to join?

We're in Prem, we handled JKA situation poorly as we did Costa, Dan James and Nketiah, I dont know how much I'd be trusting the AR and Orta promises.

As a junior I'd be looking at the importation of Perkins, Gyabi and Gnonto and wondering where my opoprtunities really lie.

How many of these u21/23s really come through?
They get sold, released or loaned out and only ones recently to make a breakthrough, Greenwood, cant get a game, and gelhardt is struggling for minutes and gets subbed off.

this last match, I can understand planning to give Bamford minutes, but if plan changes with Rodrigo injured, you cant then sub off Gelhardt, he doesnt get the minutes and he then starts to question his future in teh pecking order which is now called into question with Gnnonto signing.

Had we signed a Vardy type player short term for this season, prolific scorer, if I were gelhardt I would see its short term, can help me learn and I can see my chance.

If we're signing younger striker, with caps and for longer contract Id have real question as to what the plan is for me and I would not be surprised if Bamford and Rodrigo regains fitness and we see Gelhardt loaned out at some point, maybe not this season but next.

Robles ok we have a back up....now Sinisterra. Thought he's played well when on, needs more minutes, could be something good, have to be careful not to compare to raphinha, but I feel this could be a good one.

Overall, for money spent, I think we've done ok.

Are we stringer than last season, I'm not sure we are, BUT, last season's team didn't deliver and the proof will be if we can stay up again this season, because the squad is just as thin as last season's and wasn't that the reason cited for our issues, small squad?

I felt we'd turned a bit of a corner after Chelsea game, but that had to be built upon, I haven't seen that last two games and todays match is hugely significant for just a few months ago, 3-1 at Brentford was massive result, without similar result today it's fair comment to say that progress isn't what we're being told it is.

It was outrageous to sell dan James to a potential relgation competitor without bringing in a replacement. Yet again we have a small squad with minimal quality on the bench. James, despite his flaws, worked hard and added pace to our attack.

I'm just speechless at how these owners keep rinsing the club and don't invest in additional quality we need.

Or maybe he had to shift james out to allow 18 year old gnonto in.

Utter lying shambles of a club.
