Which world cup targets underwhelmed?

For me Lautaro Martinez showed he's over valued. Good player but the figure Inter wanted is questionable. Especially as Alvarez who cost a fraction of his asking price outshun him.

Gvardiol looks good but is he 70/80m. Messi over powered him. Gvardiol could get a shock in the prem if he isn't used to physicality.

I thought Messi showed up well.
And MBappe too.
Di Maria was pretty good.
...
And there's an older guy called Sandy around here somewhere who do as well as all the rest on the pitch.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Haaland could break Messi and Ronaldo’s scoring records tbh, but a lot of things have to happen for it to be possible.

Mbappe I think will though, he doesn’t seem quite as susceptible to injury.

But Messi and Ronaldo brought so much more to the game than scoring which is what makes them better footballers.

Messi number 1, Ronaldo 2 for me of all time.

Not a chance Haaland will beat Messi or Ronaldo total goals. He is not on the same level as either, and will probably never will be.

He will probably never play in a world cup proper either, and his interest could soon evaporate if he gets just to play club football, and does not get involved in the top International Tournaments.

Oh ...WOW..."top international tournaments" now, is it?
What happened to the good old mud wrestle Premiership, Sandy?

Think Devon had a hard on for Martinez. I never thought he was all that before the WC so glad I was proved right but he is better than what he showed.

With Gvardiol (and Bastoni) , both are clearly good footballers but are they good defenders? If you are paying north of £50m for a CB they have to be able to defend. For me the jury is still out.

Exactly this. I'm not sure what Conte wants to be honest. Ball playing flank CBs won't be that strong at defending. One of the CBs must be a monstrous defender and if that's the CCB then Dier needs to be replaced sharpish

That Stoke defender at the world cup exactly fits the bill of what Spurs need at CB.

Souttar has always been a talent. however has always had bad injury problems. easily missed about half his career with long term injuries.

The guy has had 3 achilies injuries and twice ruptured his ACL im sure.

His brother John is also a talented defender who suffers equally as bad from injuries.

I remember when we bought Ilie Dumitrescu… after the 1994 World Cup… overwhelming for Romania… seriously underwhelming for Spurs…

Was the same for Helder Postiga… after the 2002 World Cup?

The money being quoted for players is becoming ridiculous again… I don’t want us paying £80/£90m… for an up & coming defender… lots of players available on a free, at the end of the season.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeh players can look really good at World Cups, then flop when they come to the UK. I remember how good Gerry Armstrong looked for Northern Ireland in the 1982 World Cup, but he was hardly a great success at Spurs.
