Money needed.

With new owners and influx of funds, Newcastle are on the up.

With a highly rated young English manager, investment in players and a fan base that now believes and turns up in huge numbers each how game, with a few months Newcastle have now risen to the top on the English game and are looking to break into top two and who knows maybe even reach the very top this season.

The chance for a team to do this organically is slim to none.

It can only done with financial backing.

Leeds have said on numerous occasions we need to live within our means, we need to sell to buy.

This is the model of a lower half to mid table Prem team at best.

Much as I'd like us to get to the top and win things organically, it will simply never happen.

The current ownership structure and approach to business and the associated goals have to change if we want to progress.

Sad state of current football, but the reality we now find ourselves in.

Manchester United put their faith in Sir Alex who had never previously managed in England. He did reasonably well.

Spot on jonty

Football has become like formula 1.
Plenty of teams were able to have periods of domination in the game through the 60s to 90s but every season you would get different challengers and smaller clubs enjoying cup runs.
Nowadays the top 6 now 7 can be predicted at the start of the season and by October they are set. Yes we got leicester but this rarity has got rarer.

Watson - your example of Ferguson is poor. Man Utd when he took over were biggest club in England with Liverpool and he spent fortune after fortune. There are 92 league clubs. Tell us how a conference side of today rises into the premier league and wins the fa cup like Wimbledon did. Salford have backing and they’ve stalled in league2. Lots on non league sides have enjoyed rides from tier7 to 3/4 but they’ve all gone back down as quick as they came up because they can’t sustain the wages structures of today’s game.

Strange comments from someone who labels Bolton as their side. Rich Owner dies club plummets.

Chins up, we could be set to take Chris Wood off them on loan ......

It's a little unfair on the Toon to say it's all about the money, when 60+ million of went on a player we have hardly seen yet, Izak. Yes, they have spent large, but they have a superb coach in Eddie Howe. Just listen to his podcasts to hear one of the game's brightest coaches since Wenger.

As for the money they spent on Chris Wood? His holding of the ball against Leicester was superb and his penalty was emphatic. He would be a very good addition for us.
As for the City game, results fell kindly for us today, so some of the pressure is off. The thought of starting Forshaw or Klich fills me with dread, perhaps a more effective solution would be to bring Struijk into the sweeper role, with Hjelde, Koch, Coops and Rasmus at the back. It's a bit flimsy, but at least it gives us a presence in the defensive midfield area.
I think we can hurt City but, unfortunately, not as much as they can hurt us.

Gakpo gone to Liverpool. Least we can move on now from that one

Gakpo, Cunha and now we've reportedly cooled interest in Hall. Imo we'll be going for Wagner, spend 3 weeks of Jan negotiating a deal for Wood and maybe the Moroccan who Orta wants

"Yes we got leicester but this rarity has got rarer. "

Leicester invested in a proven high level manager and had a billionaire owner, and spent substantially.

That's the point, no one does it organically.

I haven't said that, I said this:

"With a highly rated young English manager, investment in players and a fan base that now believes and turns up in huge numbers each how game,"

Our current paradigm isn't going to get us anywhere other than mid table at best.

Who gets sold next in Jan and the summer?

Harrison?
Meslier?

Something has to change for us to be able to fund anything.

Jonty is spot on.

So is LIW.

We are in a completely different era. Everybody seems to be doing better and enjoying the riches that abound in the Premier League, except for the:
1) individual fans who are priced out of attending games,
2) individual fans who cannot even get a ticket if they wanted to go to games,
3) clubs which don't have owners with huge resources to attract the talent needed to compete with the clubs that do.

On the positive side, the modern stadiums, beautiful pitches and media coverage have made the beautiful game more accessible to UK fans and the rest of us all over the world.

Best solution would be to reduce players' wages, enabling a reduction in the cost of replica kits and matchday tickets. Free market forces, with supply & demand being the operative phrase, means this is unlikely with grounds and kits pretty much selling out week after week.

Sorry Jonty, not going to happen.

Yep, this has sadly been the case since at least as long as the Prem has been in existence … and we were absent just at the wrong time when the ‘big 6’ were forming into such … without our financial meltdown, I’ve no doubt we’d have been in the ‘big 4’. Ho hum.
