I miss proper 4-4-2

Maybe it’s because I’ve recently entered my 30s, but I find myself reminiscing about the good old days of football in the late 90s, and I couldn’t help but think about that treble winning 4-4-2.

I think it was enabled by Scholes and Keane. The pair of them were unreal together so even that season in Europe they weren’t dominated, and that meant Cole and Yorke could do their thing up front, supported by Giggs and Beckham.

I think nowadays you mostly either have attacking or defensive midfielders, and instead you don’t have people running box to box to make up for space. Anyone who attacks slightly wants to be a number 10 with zero responsibility so that couldn’t possibly work in a midfield 2.

Does anybody else miss 4-4-2 or am I just getting old?

Anyone who's "recently entered his 30s" must have been all of 5 years old in the late 1990s.

And certainly too young to be using words like "reminisce", "good old days" or "nowadays".

I do miss 442. Strike partnerships were so much fun.

Four four fooking two.

It was more fun lets be honest but also responsible for the humblings the England national team took for years.

What's their current excuse?

As football tactics/approaches change I wouldn't be surprised to see some 'old' formations making a comeback.

I've sometimes thought that a big man/quick little man duo up front could be used to combat teams pressing them.

I'm sure United 1999 442 would be fine as well as Beckham and Giggs would be more than good enough to play infield as well.

Bottlers.

Weighed down by a history of bottling.

Why wasn’t that the excuse before then and 442 was the reason?

A few teams still play 442 and play it successfully.

If you’re harking back to how football generally was played in that era then fair enough. I do think some of that is getting old and rose tinted glasses though, I went through a period of watching quite a few old games a while ago and it’s really not as exciting or good as you remember!

Nostalgia can do that. I’ve even seen Chelsea fans saying they were entertaining under Mourinho.
