I keep hearing that United can’t afford to buy both Onana and a striker such as Hojlund or Taremi.
I’ve also heard that our budget is between £120 – £150m.
These two sentences do not make sense when considered together. We also keep hearing that Forest will sign Henderson for £25m. That increases our budget to around £175m. With one sale.
Mount cost £55m (+£5m but that won’t be counted as part of FFP as it’s not seen as part of the liability until it’s realised).
Inter apparently want €50m for Onana. That converts to £43m.
Hojlund is likely to cost around £50m. Taremi £20m.
That’s a total of £148m, or £118m if we sign Taremi.
Even without sales that’s under our transfer budget, assuming the journalists are right (they never are). Last year they said we only had a budget of £100m. We then spent more than double that.
Newcastle's revenue is a quarter of ours but they've just spent £50m on one player and plan to sign at least two more. Their spend will end up being around £150m.
Under new FFP rules, we can spend 90%$ of our projected £640m revenue on transfers, wages and agent fees. Our current wage bill is about £213m. That includes De Gea's salary so in reality it's about £195m as things stand.
The journalists and media mouthpieces know absolutely nothing. The only thing stopping us spending more than our quoted budget will be the Glazers not willing to sign off on spend while the takeover is still in the balance.

Surely United's wage bill is a factor in all this?
It isn't just who you buy and sell, it's also how much you have to pay them.

Yes, but our wage bill is "only" 213m, or 33% of our projected revenue.

Without De Gea's salary it's closer to 195m.

Our wage bill is healthiest its been in last 8+ years, saved ~800k a week with Ronaldo and ddg gone, lots of deadwood being let go (Bailly and Jones), season before we let Pogba, Lingard etc go.
This United only have 100M to spend narrative is actually a really good spin from the club so we don't get abused for player fees. Look at Mount deal, its like us selling Rashford to Chelsea can you imagine the reaction.
