Unfairly judged

Can anyone explain why GKs are judged differently to other positions?

DDG for example, regulalry makes super saves, many of which have secured us points, and yet these are dismissed as no more than he is paid to do, and is instead judged on the things he cannot / is less capable of.

Compare this with Rashford, who quite often does very little to impact games if not scoring or assisting, and yet any criticism of his overall game is met with goals / assist stats.

This isn't just for United fans / players, but they are good examples, given their current situations (1 about to sign massive deal, the other being wished out the door by a lot of our fans)

Yes, because the stuff he is less capable of is far more important to the team than what he is good at (which isn't much nowadays tbh). Whatever keeper we sign isn't going to be perfect, but I would quite happily trade De Gea for a GK who will make a few more howlers but is actually accomplished at helping us build up play and control games. In fact, that's probably what we'll be getting with Onana.

You’ve asked this plenty of times. The issue isn’t that keepers are unfairly judged, it’s that you are unable to understand football.

It isn't just the mistakes that he gets criticism for, he looks petrified every time the ball is at his feet. I feel more nervous when we take a short goal kick than I do if the opponent has a corner. How many times do you see the CBs take the goal kick, pass to each other then pass to DDG just for him to aimlessly kick it long??

A GK these days isn't just a shot stopper, they have to be far more than that. The difference between DDG & Alison/Ederson is huge, not just those 2 either.

Fact remains, for whatever his shortfalls are, he earns us points with some of his worldy saves. They are as valuable as goals, but all we concern ourselves with is his shortfalls.

I feel for whoever our next GK will be. Unless they are a brilliant all rounder, they are in for a hell of a time.

Is there any objective metric which shows De Gea has earned us more points with 'worldy saves' than the average prem keeper this season? Because tbh i really doubt its the case.

Although not a direct answer to your OP.
I find reputations or stigma sticks with GK's more than any other position.

An example of this is when a keeper can't play out from the back suddenly all their other mistakes are highlighted a la DDG.

Also feel that keepers who are seen as being world class, their mistakes are glossed over, Ederson and Allison benefiting from this the last two years.

Kepa is another one, who under Lampard a few years ago was an absolute train wreck. Add that to the league cup final debacle where for some reason the manager wanted to take him off when he was fine and he won't shake the detractors.

Kepa had a fantastic season this year but you won't hear anything about it, also won save of the year.

So whilst not a direct answer to your question, I do think gk's get put in a box very quickly and the reputation lasts.

Made sense as the game was heading for penalties and Caballero (reserve GK) had won the game for City in the previous season by saving 3 pens.
