Jackie Blanchflower.

Another player on the plane from Munich, he didn't get killed, but was so badly injured he couldn't play after.
Few people know him now, but many will know of his brother, Danny, captain of Spurs double winning team in the sixties.
My recollections are not many, or clear, but he deserves to be known by United fans.
He had been dealt a poor hand in life generally. I only vaguely remember him as a forward', and Bobby Charlton pushed him out , at left half he came up against Duncan ! Then he moved to centre half, I remember him best there.
Good in the air, good control I'm sure he had more attributes, but ten, eleven year old boys didn't recognise them. He was quiet, I liked him, he didn't often get beaten, and he was a good passer I think.
When he got home, the club turfed him out of his club house, and when he became unemployed Edwards offered him a job in his meat factory.
I remember my Mum reading it out in the evening paper, she was irate about it. I almost stopped supporting us because of it, but the disaster made me want to still go, the neighbour still went, and we had Bobby to watch.
Anyway I hope his name will be remembered as a Munich victim, he was only a young man, I don't know his exact age, but it ruined his career, and most of his life.

He was 24 and by that time had played 117 times for United, according to his Wikipedia page:

Blanchflower was severely injured, suffering from a fractured pelvis and arms and legs, and crushed kidneys, and his right arm was nearly severed. He was in hospital for two months and (although not a Catholic) was read the last rites but survived.

He tried to return to football, but never made a full recovery. Doctors advised him not to return to football because of fears he would damage his kidney and, a year later, Blanchflower retired from football. The Munich air disaster meant that he had played his last game of football when still only 24 years old, having earned 12 caps for Northern Ireland, played well over 100 times for Manchester United and won one league championship medal.

The next bit talks about the bit you mentioned in your article. No need to hammer the point home.

He ws 24 when he packed football in. Fortunately for him he had a great story to tell and did after dinner circuit. I met him at a Dinner once.

Louis Edwards was chairman of United.
You probably remember his son Martin who became chairman, and famous ! for looking under the door of the women's toilets.
A nice family.

My dad spoke highly of of him, wish I’d have quizzed him more about the babes, he never really mentioned Duncan, he was a big fan of Eddie ‘snake hips’ Coleman maybe cos that’s because he played on the wing for Poynton and later Macclesfield, ( I WAS George Best ) in the playground, went on to play for Stockport boys but that’s where my football career ends, pub teams and very badly constructed runners up medals being my only consolation

Boris majors on this story about Martin Edwards 52.

And the fact that Louis Edwards allegedly supplied rotting meat to MEC schools dinner canteens.

Beware mentioning it to him.

I must admit I knew very little about Jackie Blanchflower, other than his career was ended at Munich.

Although I know a lot about Danny.
