Stats...what are they good for? Absolutely

So... a bit tongue in cheek with the title but saw this on bbc
https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/67587754 about Onana and how stats support him being a good keeper. I was a bit floored with some of them and then was amused by how stats can seem good whilst the eye test shows you what is real. No Arsenal fan would have Onana over out 2 goalies I bet.

So bringing this to the Raya vs Ramsdale debate, I fully believe that there is little to choose between the 2 but Ramsdale gets my vote due to some of the intangibles and the eye test when he was confident. Even though stats claim Raya is better.

Thoughts?

Onana's absolute howlers will of course distort reality at least a bit, it's the goalkeepers curse that generally when they make a mistake it leads to a goal and potentially dropped points in an obvious manner.

When a striker that does a lot but has poor finishing like Jesus or Nunez fluffs easy chances their next goal tends to wipe people's memories and all is forgiven. Of course the rest of their game being useful helps too.

Back to Onana in particular, he does seem flawed in the basics, can that still be taught? We're talking about positioning and even diving technique, stuff promising 14 year olds would be expected to understand let alone a pro. He's obviously still better than most, if unconventional but the flaws in basic technique need addressing at this level.

Finally those stats in particular are a bit silly, too few games and too few chances involved to be particularly meaningful. One or two games could change the whole table.

ETH is still right to use them in the keepers defence though, time and time again the psychology of backing players publicly is proved better than not (especially when there's no real alternative on the bench).

Not that I know him, but Jesus Wept. If your stats tell you that the best 3 keepers in the PL are Kaminski, Onana and Neto, the key takeaway should be that your model needs to go in the bin.

Reminds me of the days when we had Almunia, Fabianski and Vito and Wenger would go on about us have 3 world class GKs

Raya has made mistakes, but when he hasn't he's shown enough for me to understand why the manager persists with him.

He's starting to reduce those errors now he's used to the style arteta wants. It's about being error free for him now.

Statistically speaking, stats are vital...statistitians will tell you that..they have the stats to prove it

Copied this off another article, and backs up how misleading stats can be…..

On a related note, did anyone see the breakdown of the whole 'Doku dribbled past Trent 6 times' stat? I saw a video showing all of the incidents. Think there was only one where Doku Beat Trent to the bye line and got a cross in. Most were him just chopping back inside and then running into Matip or one of the midfield... So Trent was doing exactly what you want your full back to do in that situation... Makes a mockery of the stat tbh

Jury is still out, this year we are conceding less chances against us. It's the Lens and Newcastle game saves he has to improve on.

We've played a more defensive style so far this season, or maybe more extreme control style would be a better way of describing it.

It's not really given Raya much chance to show how good his passing range supposedly is. As playing riskier balls, early to start quick counters doesn't fit our incredibly controlled style.

Hopefully we'll see it as the season goes on, as otherwise I really don't see the point of Ramsdale getting so unceremoniously outdated but I guess you can't argue with results so far...
