Duncan Edwards

The last of the Munich victims.

Look at the above photo, what do you see? Duncan's on the left. Do you see a footballer? If you do it's only because of the kit, what you actually see is a
young hard looking man, and he was.
I'm not going to tell you about his footballing skills, you all know, but his presence. When he was eight the sports teacher wrote that he was a future England footballer. Bobby Charlton was a youth international and star prospect, he was eighteen when he made his debut, Duncan was sixteen and became a first teamer, he was only twenty one when he died.

At OT when I stood at the front, he was the man we watched, fast, skillful and hard, that word again, hard in the tackle, shoulder charge, shot.
It was all done with certainty, no hesitation, he knew he was good, not in a big headed way, just because he knew he was. Everyone looked up to him because he had a dominating presence.
In a hackneyed phrase, he was the man you wanted next to you in the trenches.
As long as the club exists I hope all the victims continue to exist, but I'm fairly sure Duncan will. I treasure my memories. I was lucky to see him live, right in front of me. So tonight Duncan, here is a toast to you.

I don't know Stringer, Moore was a good player, and perfect captain. I think Duncan would have been in Nobby Stiles place.

Or Martin Peters

I remember my Dad always spoke highly of Charlton and Peters more than any English player in that World Cup team.
He defo had a huge respect for Bobby Moore, but it was always them two.

And going back to Big Dunc, I have a picture hanging on my wall of the ‘58 team, along with the ‘85 team, ‘93 team and ‘99.
And I still have my first ever record, a 7 inch vinyl of Glory Glory Man Utd.

My grandad and my Grandma didn’t open their curtains on Munich day, when I was very young I remember my mum telling me not to make too much noise as it was Munich day.

When we won the European cup in 99 iBusby said the young fans wouldn’t understand but I did.

I was there at the Camp Neu with my dad, he took me everywhere to watch United and this Friday is the first anniversary of his passing last year.

Well done 52 for remembering the true wearers of our badge, we can all disagree about managers and players but the true love is our memories in support of this amazing football club

Better than Law Charlton n Best according to the few people I have known in my life who saw all four play.

To think Real Madrid won those early 5 European Cups when we had an incredible team cruelly taken away from us with arguably the greatest player on the planet in Duncan Edwards.

My friend's dad was a United supporter. He attended the first game after the Munich crash, and my friend inherited the program he bought then. The program includes an appeal for prayers for Duncan Edwards' recovery. Overwhelmingly sad to read. My mate - who is a blue - gave the program to his nephew who is a United supporter. Pretyy generous I thought and an example of why I love Manchester.

Di Stefano, Kopa, Gento, Rial, Santamaria...and later on Puskas

That Madrid team was the best of the period, including Man Utd with Edwards

…..

We will never know, will we, as that team died at Munich.

Bernabéu had huge respect for Busby and United, and Madrid did more than any other side to try to lend you guys a hand after the disaster.

There's a book about it, written by a Manc. You can get the e-book for a couple of quid.
