Valencia vs Real Madrid

Probably the most extraordinary finish I've seen in a match this season.

Jude Bellingham scored what would have been a dramatic winner for Madrid but apparently the ref had blown for the final whistle just as the cross was coming into the box before Bellingham headed the ball in.

Conteoversial doesn't begin to describe it. Finished 2-2 in the end but the Real Madrid players were absolutely fuming at the referee.

There's always been a fine line whether the ref should wait until an attack breaks down before blowing the final whistle or not.

In any case this was one of the very best football matches I've watched this season.

A controversial ending , Bellingham sent off after the final whistle , Vinicius seemingly doing the "black power" sign at the Valencia fans after scoring his first of 2 goals tonight ( his first visit to Valencia since he was racially abused last season ) , a last minute penalty overturned by VAR and sadly an absolutely horrific leg break for Diakhaby... This game had it all

I did a referees course years back and someone asked the question about when the game should finish.

The instructor said ‘if you’re stupid enough to stop the game when the ball is heading for goal then you’ll have to deal with the consequences’.

He was clear that referees should wait for an obvious moment to end the game.

Obviously, but the fact of the matter is that he was within his rights to blow up for FT. He actually did the same at the end of the first half, when Valencia were in a dangerous position. I think it's likely that the possibility of Madrid scoring in similar circumstances influenced his decision at the end of the game.

It's all pretty tedious though. Madrid conceded two goals through very sloppy errors and found themselves rowing against the tide for the entire game. No point scapegoating the ref. Take the point and move on.

Yep, agreed.

It’s just a thoroughly unnecessary controversy to bring upon yourself as an official.

Like goal line tech, the amount of time the ball is in play is black and white. It’s one of the first bits of tech that should’ve been brought into the game, a stop start timer, the ref doesn’t need to worry about it,

The time had gone beyond the added time given but there was a 3-4 minute delay for a VAR check which needed to be compensated for. It was such an odd time to blow, either blow as soon as an attack is done or wait for current attack to finish. Refs far too often seem to lack basic common sense.

I think they should at least trial it, on paper it makes a lot of sense.

And, still crack down hard on time wasters during the trial.

Nothing controversial about the ending at all. Ref had gone way past the original time added on and blew his whistle before the cross went in.

Still? I see 15 minutes of time wasted at OT every week. They haven’t punished it since the first few games of the season.

I am not sure why any black player calibre of Vini would want to play in this country. Disgrace!

Yeah completely agree that time wasting, faking injury etc is rarely punished. Just meant I can see players still wasting time even with the clock stopped as it can interrupt the other sides flow.
