If we get De Zerbi it's going to take some time to have a team in place that is able to play the way he likes.

That's the big downfall. You just don't get time at this club like you don't at Madrid, Barca, Bayern. You have to come in and succeed (relative to the season goals) immediately.

I definitely wouldn't be unhappy with De Zerbi though. Brighton absolutely play us off the park regularly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
De Zerbi would be a disaster with this squad.

Imagine him trying to play out the back with the likes of AWB, Maguire, Lindelof, Verane, Casemiro, Dalot, Rashford, Bruno.

The only players who could play in such a way are Onana, Martinez (never fit), Shaw (never fit) and Mainoo.

The rest crumble under any kind of pressure or are simply incapable of keeping the ball.

Not to mention the forward lines lack of movement and technical ability.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe, but that's not really the way we should be approaching our next appointment. Regardless of who is the manager, we're never going to get anywhere near the top with a backline who can't play out, players who can't keep the ball under pressure and a forward line who lack movement and technical ability.

At this point, we need to identify the manager we want first and get the players who fit second. Otherwise top 4 is always going to be our ceiling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's where I disagree. The footballing directors need to decide what their vision is, and recruit accordingly.

The manage is a part of that, but more important is the scouts, the youth development and player recruitment.

I've said a number of times, the next manager won't last, because it'll either be a stop gap manager to get results with this squad or it'll be a manager who can't get the squad to play how he wants.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It sounds like we're agreeing then...

With £400m we should have a fairly decent team now. And before anyone jumps the gun....I don't mean one that should be taking the title off Pep but we shouldn't be getting battered by every single team we play either.

He's had enough time and money now for the vision to be clear. It's not clear. We aren't any better than under Ole.

It really is. Scary times.

I thought he might be the one but I was wrong about him. Even last season we didn't pass the eye test really. Our defence and Rashford papered over some gaping cracks.

Sooner he's gone the sooner we can start the rebuild. He's not turning around this football team. He doesn't look like he knows how.

Only scousers and Bitters seriously think he should get another go next season. I wouldnt even give him the FA cup to win for his own ego and CV. The players can do that.

Thats IF Ineos can convince somebody with PL pedigree to replace him under the new changes. Which I doubt.

We don’t have the structure in place but we have still in the main given the manager money to bring in players he wants which surely fit in with whatever style he wants. Problem is there doesn’t seem to be much of a style under EtH.

Obviously we shouldn’t be giving the manager the power EtH seems to have but he should still be doing more and at least showing glimpses of a playing style with the players he’s brought in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The passing, controlled football we saw under him at Ajax is certainly not evident at Utd. We still play counter attacking football. We simply don't have the players to operate in his style, so says the manager.

Irrespective of the shortage of the right resources it is disappointing we are not seeing the pattern of play, the incremental improvements. A massive part of that is the midfield and central defence. The defence has been decimated by injuries with Licha a key absentee. He is the only player in our squad with the ability to pass between the lines. A poor midfield is a crucial factor in the lack of control so why doesn't he play a 3 there rather than a 2?

Whilst I sympathise with the lack of structure he

ETH is often not helping himself with sheer stubbornness either and I would not be surprised if he was to go for the stubbornness alone. His saving grace will be the transition in getting the structure right and the DoF and CEO rightly having the time to assess before they make a decision. A clean break is an option, start afresh but it all boils down to whether the new regime feel ETH needs a squad assembled by the right people before being judged. They also can't be tone deaf, they must factor in fan sentiments too, the views from the fans is definitely polarised.

We shall see.

I think it's hilarious that some posters think that conversations havent taken place with Barada and Ashworth already. This is what's stupid about gardening leave. It's open to abuse because we have something called the internet and also mobile phones.

Id be amazed if the two incoming execs haven't already spoken to Jim about targets. In fact I'm almost certain they will have. This is all part of the game that goes on.

Might as well bring in Conte. At least he's good at getting mediocre players playing.

Berrada at City was involved in the money side of transfers but not the football side, and certainly not identifying targets. Or at least that’s what he said when I asked him.

It’s far better than keeping an outgoing employee involved in and access to private company information.

My mistake I met him pre covid, his role changed in 2020.
