R.I.P Terry Medwin

Former Swansea, Tottenham Hotspur and Wales winger Terry Medwin has died aged 91.

The Swansea-born forward played 30 times for Wales and scored the winning goal in the 2-1 win against Hungary in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

He was also part of the Spurs squad that won the league and cup double in 1961 and the FA Cup again two years later.

His career was ended by a broken leg suffered while playing for Spurs in 1963.

Medwin's goal against Hungary at the Rasunda Stadium in Solna ranks among the most important scored by a Wales player.

It gave Wales a 2-1 win and earned them a place in the quarter finals against Brazil.

A goal by 17-year-old Pele knocked Wales out of the tournament but it remains their best performance at the World Cup.

I remember discussing with one of the older members of the Spurs board (GeniusGreaves maybe?) that Terry Medwin was the last surviving Spurs player from the first ever match he attended.

Medwin wasn't appearing as much for Spurs in the double season, but he still made an important contribution for the team that season and had played seven years for them by the time a leg break forced his retirement in May 1963. He also scored in Bill Nicholson's first game in charge of Spurs in a 10-4 win against Everton that took place in October 1958

Fellow Welsh and Spurs legend Cliff Jones is now one of two survivors that was in the 1958 World Cup squad and it was great that Jones and Medwin could reunite in a segment on ITV before Wales played their first match at World Cup 2022.

Terry would have played many more games for Spurs if it wasn’t for Jones & Dyson. Mainly a right winger he was also capable of playing on the left too.
As Braveheart said, Medwin was in the Spurs team that thrashed Everton 10-4 in October 1958, my very first visit to White Hart Lane.
Condolences to Terry’s family.

Interestingly I've just found an old Twitter of Terry Medwin's:

https://twitter.com/terrymedwin

He was the first Spurs player to score under the management of Bill Nicholson.

Actually I read that wrong, he scored in Bill Nicholson's first game, but not the first goal.

Interesting GeniusGreaves that the first match you attended was Bill Nicholson's first game in charge.

You are correct Braveheart, it was nice to be at the start of a new era for Spurs. Who knows Ange could be on the brink of something big too🤔
