Mentality monsters

Once again Leverkusen pull it out of the fire and maintain their unbeaten record. When Alonso took over last season they were second bottom of the league and just a ragtag bunch of promising youth and older average players. He’s changed the mentality of the club with great success. This was a club who’d had 9 managers in 10 years prior to his arrival.

We’re very unlikely to get Alonso as a manager but he’s proof that some ‘unicorn’ managers can come to a club who’d been going through managers regularly and make miracles happen. Which is why when people say we should keep a manager underperforming just because we’d fired so many before that sometimes you just have to keep being ruthless until you get the right man.

Puts it in perspective when the much heralded 'invincibles' longest unbeaten run in their 'invincible' season was 17 games.

Perhaps.

Remember the state Liverpool were in Rodgers and Woy? Things can change quickly with 2/3 seasons of sensible decisions.

Obviously City being relegated to the NW counties league will help too 😜

I tend to agree with the point here. What most pundits tend to not realise when they lazily point out that patience is the key to success, is that, by and large, longevity is usually only reserved for those doing well. Therefore, the data is skewed to make long term managers appear more successful than short-term ones, which is inaccurate. If they're still in a job it's because they're on an upward trajectory. Something positive will be taking place, even if results are yet to turn. If you have the wrong man in the hot seat, time won't change a thing. You'll just continue to lose.

If Ten Hag is still in a job come August, it's because there are no credible alternatives available. It's very rare to see someone flourish from their third season in. If they're the right person, you'll have at least seen some marked difference at the tail end of their first season. United have no clear philosophy, no patterns of player, a scattergun approach to recruitment, even though Ten Hag has had some freedom in that regard during his time. Yet here you are, giving up control in games to relegation fodder and facing a record number of shots on goal. He's had two feckin years to at least get something right. Name one area where you're better.

Ask yourself this - who has improved under his reign? Name one player, aside from the younger lads up top, who was in the side before he came in who's a better player now. I don't think you'll find one.
