Jarred Gillett...

Congratulations to the Australian for becoming the first foreigner to ref the North London Derby.

Gillett first came to prominence for awarding a penalty for a player taking an air shot and falling over to gift Brisbane Roar the A-League title. A glorious day for their manager "Big Ange" Postecoglou. Gillett was consistently given the big games in Australia and won many ref awards.

Highly rated by his bosses but hated by everyone else, Gillett was snatched by the PGMOL and brought to England. As Australia were first to use VAR, he was seen as an expert in the field. One of his first calls was to overrule the on-field ref and disallow an Arsenal goal for absolutely nothing.

He has long been golden boy of the PGMOL, although he has continued to irritate and upset football managers up and down the country - probably most noticeably when he disallowed a late West Ham goal against Chelsea for nothing.

His record in the PL when reffing us isn't that bad for us - 4 wins but that slightly controversial defeat to Aston Villa last season make up the 5 league games he has reffed us.
He has been man in the middle for Spurs 7 times, 5 at home. They have a mixed record, winning 4 but losing 3. Unlike for Arsenal, he has sent off a Spurs player - Bissouma against Forest. He also gave Brighton 2 penalties in a 4-2 Spurs defeat - both those games were away though.

Gillett is known as a bit of an egotistical and arrogant ref, not believing in the mantra that a good ref is an unnoticed ref. He has starred in documentaries about himself, got mic'd up for his last A-League game for a TV show and isn't afraid of the limelight. He has also stated he is a Liverpool fan, which is a shame for a lad too young to have seen the glory days. A confidence in his own ability that should be an asset to his performance.

Of course the ref has the fall back of VAR, so as long as we have a good ref on VAR we should be fine...

Stuart Attwell is on VAR. A ref fast tracked to the PL, who has been demoted for poor performance, is best known for giving a goal despite the ball going 6 yards wide.

As Winston would say, it is up to the players to play within the rules and show sportmanship throughout. Hopefully the ref will be a minor character in Sundays game.

Good luck Mr Gillett on the historic day coming.

Its hard to ref games with that jack in the box on speed Arteta bouncing about the side lines appealing for everything and moaning about every adverse decision.

I don't think Arteta does himself any favours the way he behaves on the sidelines. No one likes a moaner, constantly whining in games, whether that's at my age against another vets team, my kids age, or at the highest levels. Just look at how Bruno Fernandes is perceived by many. A whiner who cries wolf so often he isnt taken seriously. With people like this it is human nature to naturally, and probably sub consciously, dislike them, and this may affect decisions. Arteta doesnt have the status to try and have any influence. Managers like Klopp or Conte may also behave in similar ways but they also have the status that perhaps intimidates refs. Arteta doesnt. IMO he'd be best advised to chill out, then may be some decisions go their way and the likes of DJ can take their tin hats off.

Ah so it's Arteta's fault the refs are corrupt.

Thanks for clarifying that.

corrupt

Corruption isn't a laughing matter and certainly in the UK, is prevalent in almost every sector / industry.

If you've REALLY been paying close attention to English football in the last 30+ years you'd have to be extremely thick or gullible not to realise it.

Corruption follows money and it's the richest league in the World, shocker.

Don't expect a Spurs fan to acknowledge corruption from refs. Two refs have admitted purposely making incorrect decisions that favoured Spurs for their own personal gain.
If they are happy to publicly own up to that what are they keeping quiet?

We all know Spurs have been FA favourites for decades. For the quality of their players / achievements they've always had a disproportionate amount of players in England teams.

This extending into the remit of the referees is no real surprise.

I'm also starting to wonder whether the refs being worse every season in general is an effort to cover up/mask corruption/match fixing.

"You're corrupt!"
