DPL FA Cup v Hull City

Whereas this might have been some potential icing on the cake had it been played earlier in the season, it has now faded in significance. The emphasis now must surely be to get back to winning League games reinforced perhaps by fresh talent. What might have looked like a winnable game now looks just like the fulfilment of a fixture with the hope that it is not a morale-sapping defeat.

The fact that the opposition is still needing to concentrate on the league may work in our favour a little, but in current form, Hull are scoring goals and picking up points against good Championship opposition and seem likely to climb out of the relegation spots. They won 1-0 at Blackburn and came back to draw at home against League leaders Leeds most recently.

You might expect them to put out a weakened side and strengthen as necessary from the bench if they cannot crack us open easily, but I imagine that we will not have enough to match them.

Perhaps we may be further strengthened by another signing or signings by then, but it seems unlikely to affect the result.

The big question right now is will Craig choose Rovers or Mansfield and I suspect he’ll go with the League 1 option.

The big picture is not exactly a pretty one at Rovers right now and the chances of another Blockbuster climax to the season look meagre. At the moment you might consider 7th place feasible, but we will not be Champions and McCann’s objective will be missed by some margin.

Hull City 4 : Rovers 1 (Sharp)

It must be disturbing for everyone watching what’s happening in LA, and we know Mickey is on that west coast. I would have said 600 miles north and certainly in a different climate too, but in fact when I looked it up it’s over 900 miles north. Apparently we hear from someone who has a lot to say for himself that it’s all the fault of the Democratic politicians and not related to climate change (which seemingly is not acknowledged to be happening by the incoming administration).

Apologies for my fat fingers and the typos...

Hull 2-1 Rovers
Sharp to score ⚽

Well, very pleasantly surprised. Strong defensive performance and largely held our nerve in the penalty shootout.

Not playing a full strength team was rather naive of the Hull manager if he wanted to get through this round, although perhaps their second best players are not far behind the team that drew to Leeds. Even so, if they’d been more clinical it could still have gone against us.

Let’s hope that it boosts the confidence.

Crystal Palace at home is not the worst draw we might have got - and it ought to be televised.

Just watched the highlights on the BBC website, and luckily Hull were not very clinical, and TS-L certainly made some good saves . Should he have got a red not a yellow? Some could claim he was the last defender and denied a goal scoring opportunity. If there had been VAR.....???
Rovers' goal was a very good move and finish, and to win after Ironside, of all people, missed his penalty, gives one some encouragement.
Amazing that we now will be at home to Palace in the next round, and they were not too impressive against Stockport today (based on the highlights).
Now let us go and get three points at Gillingham.

It's still a " Who knows" season for us. The next few matches should determine how it's going to go. The Olowu/ McGrath partnership has served Rovers well. Don't forget it's not GMs first choice centre backs! The key will be how the new MU boy fits in. Walsall look champions already but all the other promotion and playoff places could be anybody's.

Perhaps I’m over sensitive, but when the (televised) draw was made for the 4th round “numbers to look out for” did not include Rovers. In previous draws much publicity has been given to the lowest placed teams still in the competition even including TV coverage of their reaction to the draw. But for Rovers, no special mention - just another team in the hat.

Incidentally “plain” and not “plane” - I only just noticed.

Signing someone named Crew is quite ironic really. Let's hope the January signings can improve our form.

Here are the latest DPL figures with the Hull "result" taken at the end of 90 minutes. It is mildly remarkable
that 4 out of 5 of us predicted Sharp would score in the Hull cup-tie.
