Leyton Orient 1-1 Derby County AET Pens 6-5

LEYTON ORIENT v DERBY COUNTY FA Cup Round 3

Tuesday 14th January 2025, 1945, Gaughan Group Stadium, London

The original game on Saturday at 6.00pm was postponed but this thread will continue in a basic, economical form with added bits because that would cost me time and it’s only the FA Cup.

Hope springs eternal - sort of - with the start of our annual foray into a competition which doesn't really inspire expectations and this includes a draw against a prominent club.

This may be a chance to get our confidence back after a bruising and disappointing few weeks. All ifs, buts, maybes and should haves.

You sort of wish that what happened with team selection in 2021 would happen again and we would have an excuse to lose.

Another away end sell out is expected, even at this very strange kick off time - however this was written for the Saturday kick-off, I can see lots of returns and refunds at the ticket office - it’s a bit difficult to get to London on a Tuesday work day - ok M25, M11 might work. Original comment does feed in to the excellent article penned by 2 Wellies - but as always (mostly), you could kick off at 2 in the morning on a school day but still sell out the away end

Team: Zetterström (GK), Wilson, Nelson, Phillips, Forsyth, Goudmijn, Thompson, Harness, Mendez-Laing (C), Blackett-Taylor, Brown.

Subs: Vickers (GK), Rooney, Elder, Osborn, Adams, Barkhuizen, Jackson, Collins, Osong

Fact is, at FT it was 1 1. Penalties ARE a lottery. Yes, a disappointing result but in the overall scheme of things, this season its a competition we dont need. Our squad is too light. Our aim this season is 4th from bottom...thats it. Other than the DCFC management team nobody knows who's ill, who's injured etc. Sounds like Phillips is now injured, CBT and NML...like i said - we dont need a cup run 🤷‍♂️

We move on.

Social media is toxic atm, I just don't know where any severance pay and an increased salary for a replacement would come from.

That's the crux.

And maybe, just maybe some of us want to see Warne through to the end of the season.

I'm not a Warne fan at all, I like the bloke but IMO Derby are going nowhere under him and I'm also of the opinion that we are a better side than PW has convinced some fans we are

However if it were me I see it out until the end of the season and re-evaluate then

A home tie v City would have been a bonanza for a club like us (who's skint).

Warne - nice bloke, but out of his depth as far as I csn see. Quite happy for him to prove me wrong tho.

Im glad there's some sensible people on here. We can't afford to sack PW and recruit new players, so it's not viable.
Could someone else get more out of the players we have? Possibly. But who???
We're better off trying to get a player or 2 in and see if that helps.
Target is to stay up. End of.

Most of the season I have felt that we would be okay & manage to stay up. But since the Sheff Weds home game I have been frustrated & started to think that it will be close run thing. Of course injuries to key players has effected the team but some of the subs have been questionable at times, which adds to the frustration!
All we can hope is that we get those important players back on the pitch & keep them fit, plus have a good transfer window for once.
It's going to be one hell of a ride....

Have now watched the first half - boring - and the penalties. Elder's was not a bad one and you could say it was a good save but the goalie danced quite a way off his line. I thought that was illegal but they mess with the rules so much I'm not sure any more. Anyone know?

I thought the goalie moved too soon, but how often do you see them pulled-up?

No VAR to scrutinise them
