Yesterday was not a great display

but bottom line cup football is all about the result. Whether 1-0 or 8-0 you have to win to progress to the next round. Performances don`t really matter all that, providing a team finds a way of getting over the line.

There were some really poor perfomances yesterday, Werner obviously the stand out, but Dragusin and Porro were both poor, as was Johnson, his goal aside. But one of the biggest disappointments was Maddison, always seems to start of brightly, then completely vanishes. He just does not seem to be cutting it right now, and his place must surely be in jeopardy.

Best midfield going forward would be Bergvall, Bissouma and probably Bentancur, if he can ever get himself on the pitch. Failing that when Romero and Micky are both up and running again, move Gray into the midfield. There surely has to be a place for Gray in any Spurs team right now. I think he would be wasted moving him back to right back. He has so much to offer.

Midweek at Arsenal the team more or less picks itself. WTF is Richarlison? I thought he should have at least been on the bench yesterday. Not expecting much, although Arsenal are not exactly firing on all cylinders, and may be able to replicate last season`s draw. Better to target the following two games against Leicester and Everton if Spurs want to move up the table to 10th. Cups are obviously the most important right now, so if anything rest players for the Prem games, and save them for the big cup games, which are going to come thick and fast over the next month.

The bottom line though is Spurs are very much still involved in three cup competitions, no matter the Prem form, and you have to be in them to win them. So who knows when the defenders start to come back fresh, the season should take a huge upturn for the better.

Yep. Man utd and ETH got slaughtered in the media after their win against Coventry, but they won the competition

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was a cup semi and Coventry were a Championship side - Cov also gave us a very good game this season, that we turned round in the last couple of mins.

Yesterday we played a team that doesn’t have a single professional player and the manager had only turned professional that week. Their striker Enoru, will be working in Zara’s today - yet caused us loads of problems and looked better than our entire starting front line.

Before people harp on about 1991 - that day up in Blackpool was us trying to play in gale force conditions on a pitch more suited for dirt biking. Yesterday the artificial pitch was faultless and the wind had zero factor. Another thing about 1991, after winning that FA cup, we very nearly got relegated over the next couple of season after selling all of our better players - let’s hope history doesn’t repeat
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Did Spurs lose? If not, why are you going on like they did. I was at both the games with Altrincham late 70s. Sometimes it happens were lower league sides have a decent game against far better on paper opposition. It's called cup football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The games moved on Sandy, it’s not the 70’s anymore, the gulf is absolutely massive. Like I said, the Tamworth player probably earns from Zara’s and football, around £30k a year - Werner and BJ earn that in a single day.

I don’t even think Tamworth played particularly well - they were organised at the back and denied us space except for the one Werner chance. We just didn’t have a clue on how to break them down. In the end they tired and we won.

Why am I criticising after we won - because it’s obvious to me what is going to happen - at some point, my guess is late March/early April, we’re going to be out of all cups, sat 9/10th in the league - you will flip flop to sack the manager and the Ange in crowd will be talking about more windows cos he doesn’t have a good enough squad - Levy will hopefully do the decent thing and wait until 24hrs after the final game.

Then next summer we will be trying to recruit with no Europe, and a mid table squad
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I always think mentioning how much a player gets paid vs their performance is not really relevant.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your position) the game is flooded with money now so even ordinary players are on substantial wages.

Our players should have outperformed Tamworth in normal time because they are professional footballers who have everything laid on a plate for them, in terms of training, sports science, nutrition etc., not necessarily because of what they get paid.

Nevertheless, we won in the end so I personally won't go too overboard with criticising Ange/the team.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don’t get this not criticising after a win - I think it’s perfectly valid. I didn’t criticise after we lost to Newcastle - simply because I looked at who we had available and who they lined up with and could see it was an uphill battle.

Yesterday though, despite the win, the performance was one of the worst I have ever seen from a Spurs side. The front 3 was an abomination, but I Mikey Moore was playing his first game back and BJ is our top scorer - Werner over Lankshear was baffling to say the least. It was obvious that Tamworth would sit deep - Timo hates that as he has no space to run into - ditto BJ - our manager couldn’t figure that out though.

Very worrying
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't say I wouldn't criticise. I said I won't go too overboard with it.

We had a similarly bad performance against Coventry in the first round of the EFL and got through by the skin of our teeth.....then went on to beat City, United and Liverpool and have a reasonable chance of getting to the final.

Cup competitions are all about getting through to the next round.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's how normal supporters would see it.

To quote Sizzle from the NUFC game...."I don't care if we played slightly better, it's a results game"

Now he cares suddenly.

As for Strike, these are his actual words:

"Ange can still be a hero at the club - 10th and the league cup would genuinely suffice"

Seems like we're on target for that, but now suddenly its all about style and level of performance
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They both post bollox most of the time. Both entitled to their opinions, but they both think having 10/11 injuries for months shouldn't be affecting performances and results.

I doubt you will hear a peep out of either when performances improve when all the injured players return.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to remind everyone, Shandy went all the way back to 1901 yesterday to try and make a point about modern day football.

I wasn't trying to prove a point, I was just proving a fact. Meanwhile you are posting in advance of March that Spurs will be out of all cup competitions, when you don't know that as a fact at all. It's what you hope will happen, so you can say I told you Spurs were rubbish under Ange
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not what I hope will happen, my hope is we win the cup and if we do I could t care less about the league.

I do not believe a 1-0 lead will be good enough at Anfield and I would wager that at least 70% of the fanbase on here would agree with that.

Then it’s Villa, winnable but again we’ve not been to the FA cup final for 34 years, so I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Then you have Europe, my concern will be that we get dragged along to late March/April with the Ange in crowd saying he will win us the Europa, only to fall flat in our faces and be sat there with 6 or 7 games to go, 11th in the league with only a top half position to play for and some khunt telling me he needs more time.

Personally I’ve seen enough, it should be done as soon as Liverpool knock us out - hope I’m wrong about that

However, you say you "would wager that at least 70% of the fan base" would agree with you that Liverpool will knock us out in the second leg. Well, probably 90% thought we'd get well beaten in the first leg and we won!

Point being that you can keep being on a downer the whole time if you like, but don't take your pessimistic predictions as being foregone conclusions! Believe it or not, Spurs are capable of winning one off games

Aha

Okay.

Looks like we’re stuck with him anyway, for whatever reason Levy won’t pull the trigger until the summer.

We just didn’t look comfortable on that plastic pitch… the feel & the bounce would have been on our players minds, for sure… probably worried about injuries…

That being said… Maddison, Dragusin, Gray, Reguilon & Moore played ok… Bissouma was by far our best player…

Porro, Werner & Johnson & Sarr were dreadful

Of the subs… Bergvall was good… Solanke just didn’t look comfortable, at all!

Bergvall has justified his start, in the NLD… absolutely no Werner or Johnson starting… impact subs against tired legs, at best… both need upgrading in the summer… Spence is also better than Porro, in my opinion.

Highly rated at youth level, one of those young players always talked about as being on the brink - never seen him play though
