What a joke of a tournament. In the past you has to play CL group stage drop-outs in the later stages. These days you get the likes of Bodo/Glimt and Bilbao in the Semis .
Would rather win the Carabao cup.
Wenger is completely right. The winners should not get CL football.

Never liked CL teams dropping down to the Europa either, rewarding failure was ridiculous.
======
Is it really? One can argue that the team is getting relegated from a higher competition to a lower competition because they have failed in the higher competition.
Is it not unfair for a team like Aston Villa that reached the quarters this season to miss out on the CL altogether next season when team like Spurs and United sitting in 15th,16th place in their league sneak in via a much easier competition that the CL that Villa were playing in?

No. Villa did great and should be proud of their season but they got knocked out of the cup. Imo winning a cup shouldn't get you qualified for a bigger cup.
Leagues tell the real story how good a team is Man Utd shouldn't even be there imo but are because of the format which is fair enough.

Is it fair Spurs finished 5th last year but didn’t qualify for the CL but the side that finishes 5th this year will qualify for the CL because the likes of Spurs and United have done well enough in Europe to earn the Prem that extra spot?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's all too complicated strike.😄
One thing it never will be is fair.
Teams like young boys and Celtic will always get a chance.

Where the teams in the EL are in their own respective leagues has nothing to do with it. Would it make you feel better if they were 2nd and 3rd in the league? You just can't change the narrative because it doesn't suit you.
The rules are what they currently are. Sneak in a much easier competition............which you couldn't manage last season.

About 12 of the 36 CL teams can realistically say they would definitely win the EL if they were in it this season.
CL is much watered down in quality.

It’s a fact though, the 5th placed Prem side will only be in the CL next season due to the performance of the Prem sides in Europe this season. Let’s say that’s Newcastle or Forest - they have provided nothing towards that other than finishing 5th. In fact Newcastle finished bottom of their CL group last year which partly meant that Spurs didn’t get in the CL this season.
I think whoever wins the Europa has earned their spot

Childish response. This is not about Liverpool or ay particular club. It's just a discussion about some rules.

The point is why does the league position matter in a cup competition - I could say it is childish to think that is a consideration. Chelsea won the Cl whilst being poor in the league, albeit not so bad. Current league position has nothing to do with it. What is the big deal about reaching a QF? the criteria you are using doesn't make sense - how is winning a tourney, 'sneaking in'?
You say it's a much easier competition - it still has qaulity teams in it. If Villa are good enough, they will qualify via the league.

Another good point, Chelsea stopped Spurs entering the CL after winning it - despite us finishing higher.

If Spurs win it we move up to 4 European trophies compared to Arsenals 1 - that’s really quite something given domestic status
