Morning allš
Over the years, there have been a number of discussions on here which essentially expressed disappointment, surprise, incredulity that the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton could rise through the lower leagues to become a Premier League club whereas we couldnāt. Thankfully we can now let that argument slide.
However, a club that I have often considered as a peer is Aston Villa. It wasnāt so long ago that they were playing in the Championship with ourselves, but in 2019 they got promoted and after a solid 6-year run in the top-flight, including reaching a domestic cup final, they have just missed out on Champions League qualification - but they still get to play in the Europe League next season. I wouldnāt mind some of that for ourselves.
Then I read the following article. Itās a wide-ranging piece but the section by Kieran Maquire really stood out for me. Hereās an excerpt from the opening line:
āVilla ⦠have made the second highest losses in Premier League history (Ā£678m)".
If that is what lies ahead for us, Iād say right now, no thank you. Btw, I still have no idea why owners do this. Obviously thereās a convoluted reason but on the face of it, why bother?
Anyway, hereās the full article:

Our future? Hope not.

If only we could turn the clock back to the 1970s
---------------
Promo, in a sense, I thought of this.. I'm in my forties and I can only remember fans talking about finances of their clubs relatively recently? - for us, after Ridsdale especially.
thing is, the 70's 80's and early 90's in England were awful in terms of pitches, and lets be honest quality.
we certainly don't want to be back there.. I'm just not sure I get why fans all feel the need to accountants.
see with this, comes other debates - for example the amount of posters falling out on here ref the contracts debacle a year or so ago... does an average fan really know more than a billionaire/millionair football owner?
there will be loads behind the scenes at football clubs that said fans just won't know of... it baffles me it really does.
would much rather see an exciting game of football, end to end, a red card, a disallowed goal, a blistering paced winger dancing his way through on the right.

This totally. I keep it simple and focus on the games and results. That said there are some much wiser/sage posters who are more aware of finance than I am. I prefer to go for the dim option and stick to worrying about my own finances.....

- absolutely VOF - if the day ever comes I can be so concerned about anybody else finances, other than my own, that I'm having a ding dong about it on a football forum, then I've made it in life

The PL has been brilliant for football,is it still brilliant? Not for me now and for quite a few years.
As for the 1970s, so much healthy competition on the pitch, money not the biggest factor, that's an understatement. Of course there were lots of social problems.

Remember, they are basing it on information currently available, ie. the current squad.
For example, if we suddenly signed Mo Salah, then immediately those odds will change.
Wait until the end of July to witness any meaningful changes.

Also fully understand this - but for me the talk about club’s finances is a direct result of what the Premier League/elite football has become.
