Mbeumo again

So it looks like we are about to be rinsed again

First bid of £55m + add ons

Latest bid £65m + £5m in add ons

I’d hoped this recruitment team would have had other options to move on to once it looked like Brentford wanted our pants down but it seems not

Imo we’re overpaying again, he’s a decent footballer but I’m not sure he’s £70m material

Better value than some of the £55m ish players that have gone recently imo.

I think we’ll have paid a premium to pay a smaller amount up front, and instalments for a bigger portion. Giving us more to work with for other signings.

-------------------------------------------

I think it would be better value if Mbuemo had more than a year left on his contract like the other players who all seemed to have had at least 3 years remaining with their previous clubs.

I do like the signing though and famous last words but I have a feeling he'll do well for us, whether that be under Amorim long term or somebody else.

I think Brentford have an option on an additional year though, don’t they, effectively making it two years?

there was an article on the United boards only days ago about 'missing out' on targets, and you should be paying over the odds to land your man.

I agree with this article, good post

but you lot can't have it both ways

Overpaying for thr player. And while some say just pay it, remember there were people happy to dish out 70m for Sancho a few years ago.

We really do need to find players cheaper and ready to step up. Our recruitment has been all over the place.

Exactly, we need PL ready/proven goalscorers but from abroad and cheap.

Guy is basically a 10 goal a season player (except for last season where he overprrformed), is that worth 70m to us?

Hold on Baz.

He clocked up 15 G+A in 22 PL starts in 2023/4, and 17 the previous season.

He’s been consistently delivering when he’s been available over at least two seasons, and is on an upward trajectory (until we get our hands on him, at least ).

I agree that we’re probably overpaying, but am struggling to see a lot of options around which don’t involve a fair amount of risk.

Do we go for more kids from the continent? We’re already stacked with younger players and know well what the patience of United fans looks like…

I do hope this is the case- plus my post wasn’t a crit on him- it was a question really, if that 70m is worth that 10 or so goals that have a decent impact on our season then, perhaps it would be worth it.

Salah before Liverpool

Played 225 Goals 68 0.3 goals per game

Mbeumo before United

33 14
46 12
242 70

Played 321 Goals 96 0.3 Goals per game

Both were 25 when joining their new clubs.

I'm not stating that Mbeumo will get anywhere close to Salah levels but their careers have followed similar patterns.

It’s ’worth’ it relative to the market we are now involved in.

Todays market is £55m+ for Elanga, Madueke, Gittens, Ekitike at £70/80m etc players with far less PL pedigree.

Him and Cunha in fairness are far better players than id expect us to have been able to sign considering we have no Europe, aren’t offering £350k a week to anyone anymore and finished 15th. They’re also pretty perfect in terms of how they ‘should’ fit Amorims left and right sided number 10s, in contrast to any of the wingers we had last season.
