Point out it isn't just the Wolves keeper its most of them but those 2 last night were nippy and typical

Sa is one of those keepers that just can’t make up his mind whether to catch or punch, so he now just punches everything and avoids the decision making.

Earlier in the season when our captain was subbed off he threw him the armband and he punched it.

It is a risk balance. Catching the ball is better if done successfully, but if you mess it up then the ball is bouncing loose in the box right in front of the goal for a potential easy tap-in. When you are being jostled by opposing players trying to claim the ball it is very easy to mess up the catch.


My peeves is tine-wasting, and specifically when a goalie makes a straightforward catch, lands back on their feet and then collapses on the floor to waste 10 seconds.

There was a noticeable change many many years ago when goalies first started doing it in the PL. I think it's a continental thing that's been imported here and gradually grown.

Surely, as welshpoolfan says, it's happening because keepers are being coached to do it, and they're being coached to do it, presumably, because stats suggest that you're less likely to concede goals that way. A caught ball is of course safer than a punched ball. But you have a better chance of connecting with a punch than successfully catching a cross, and the chances of conceding a goal from a spilled cross must be way higher than from a punched clearance. I guess there may be some advantages to deciding early too - less likely to make a mistake if you're already committed to punching the ball than aspiring to catch it and then realising it's too high to catch but punchable. Maybe this leads to a situation where keepers are punching catchable crosses. And that's where I think there's valid criticism. Maybe there's a competitive edge in keeper who have the mental alertness and confidence to make the right decision later.

Keepers shouldn't be expected to catch everything, but there are instances where it seems strange that they chose to punch when it was possible and probably easier to catch.

Fair points all fellahs maybe it's my shady historical memories of keepers and catching the ball that makes me think that the punching is an issue but they train every day and have for many years often and do feel they should try and catch it more often

That said there is WAY more contact on keepers now and whilst sometimes they get the benefit from refs and I wonder where the foul was in days gone by teams didn't seem to press gang the keepers as much.

The wolves keeper is shocking tho, by far worst gk in the league, wolves deserve relegating for the fact alone hes still their no1

Sa is way, way down the list of reasons why we deserve relegation.

He’s an excellent shot stopper. His distribution is terrible and he’s no good coming for crosses.

With the exception of Joao Gomes none of our players should be starting in the PL, that’s on the owners and the appalling transfer policy in recent years.
