Let’s look at this from a common sense side of things - Neil Mellor; yep he banged in 13 league goals and 7 others, at a ratio of approximately 1 in 3 games. Not bad, but is that what you’d really expect of an apparently £12K a week striker?
Not for me it’s not and I have to agree that he does so often frustrate with his ethic and obvious love for pie! Let’s not also forget, of those 20 goals, 2 were hat tricks and there were a few braces too. He is not, never has been and never will be prolific. Although I do like him and I do think he can do a job at Hillsborough, he definitely needs a full pre-season of Meggy work rate training.
Personally, I’d pass on him and look for a younger, more hungry and passionate striker who’s trying to make a name for himself and who’ll thrive on playing football at Hillsborough. I think far too many people are being harsh on Madine too, he has bags of potential, give the lad a chance.
IMHO opinion, I’m neither here nor there about Mellor, take him or leave him but certainly don’t break the bank over his lardy backside.
Thoughts?

Statesider:
we've been pee'ing money away like that for decades.

Totally agree with you on this one. Our beloved club almost ended up in Memory Lane thanks to the money we've been throwing away like water! I, for one, am delighted the F.A. has clamped down on all this big spending. It's been like playing monopoly, but with real money and the greedy barstward players, playing on the idea that their careers being so short ( that's a laugh, because most of them carry on in the game one way or another earning cart-loads of money thanks to us mere mortals coughing up like a bunch of t.b. victims!!). My only complaint is that this rule is only being carried out in the lower leagues. It should have been universal!!

From the moment the Wage Cap was agreed, all wages outside of the PL dropped so that clubs will comply.
Mellor was on £18k last season which Wednesday contributed 50%. Following relegation, his wage at Preston has dropped to £12k. I don't know what has been offered but if he expects to be on £12k for his next contract then he will be on the dole next summer unless he can attract the interest of a PL club.
We saw that he made a good partnership with Madine but if he wants to hold out for more then good luck to him. Let's move on & get someone that wants to bust a gut to play for us.

get some kid off the park, that can stick in half a dozen goals in half an hour, between some jumpers placed two yards apart

Trueblue, I agree about Clinton, I too think we will see more of him especially after he puts in a full shift during pre-season. He could make an interesting partnership with Madine as well.
As for Mellor, I would like him to sign but I love the fact that M&M are sticking to their guns and putting a sensible structure in place for the future. Three year contracts at the moment will be scarce with the finance changes on the horizon.
As for the scouting situation, it obviously is still very new but I would assume the people we have doing the scouting were in scouting positions with other clubs or at least in the game doing something, so hopefully they will have arrived with some knowledge already.
Still frustrating not seeing any further signings but I suppose these things always take time.

Wouldn't panic about lack of signings. The early bird catches the worm doesn't apply.
If anything its the worst (value for money) players that move early in the windows at our level.
We picked up JoC, Teale, Sedgewick, Miller & Purse early in the windows and none of them were good signings.

Agree Chupa - the good players bide their time, check out their options and move later on! Mellor and his agent are probably doing the same, but when they realises the wage cap will provide little option - he will probably sign!

Have to disagree. An article on signings showed that the signings agreed in May & June were more successful than signings agreed in July & August. We may have made some poor early signings but generally signings in August smack of panic.
Mellor will probably sign with a couple of weeks.
