Stevenage Sign Madjo

Stevenage made their first signing of the summer, subject to international clearance, with the capture of 26 year old Cameroonian free agent striker Guy Madjo.

Madjo has played for a series of lower league and non-league teams including Bristol City and Shrewsbury but has spent the last 2 years playing abroad in China and Albania.

Graham Westley described him as "Another player with great potential. Quick, strong and with a great eye for goal."

He sounds like a bit of a risk to me, with no proven success at this level, still who knows what he learned abroad? And at only 26 there's plenty of time for him to improve. Given the success of free transfers like Charles and Mousinho I have faith the Westley chooses wisely. Even if he doesn't his policy of short term contract initially to see if players are good enough means the risk is small, look at players like Sills and Atieno, came in, weren't deemed quite good enough and went out the door again. Strikers is obviously an area Westley feels he still needs to address, we've seen a lot of strikers come and go in the last year with only Harrison and maybe Reid establishing themselves. I look forwards to seeing what Madjo can add to this.

As for the rest of the summer transfer period, I'm most hoping for some sort of left wing signings, an area I felt we struggled with last season. Employing Long out there didn't work. Winn looked ok but looked much better playing through the middle supporting a second striker. The best option was Laird at left mid and Charles at left back but even better would be an out and out left midfielder supported by Laird.
