At 19 and with limited experience, my opinion is that he is not worth 20 million and the reason that is what United paid for him is because he is English. When it comes to young English players you can double their true value and get their sale value.

Having said that, he does have a lot of potential to one day become a 20 million centre back.

don't get me wrong i hope he does turn into a great player, its just football is gone mad, i hope he turns out to be a great player sure fergie can spot a player.. just seems an awful lot of money when united got smalling for half the price

If you've never heard of this guy before, you've clearly not been a very keen follower of english football. This guy has been praised numerous times, 'next John Terry' - Ancelotti, 'Rolls ROyce' etc.

I had actually noticed Phil Jones towards the end of last season as a player with a lot of potential.

I thought however, that with Smalling, Ferdinand and Vidic (with Evans as back up) we wouldn't be buying anyone in defence.

I'm really happy that we have signed him and I don't really care about the price because I'm not paying for him. I just hope that SAF can keep them all happy.
