Favourite Books of Fiction?

War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy)

An epic peice of work. Tolstoy brings Russia to life during Napoleon's conquest of Europe up to Moscow. From the dining rooms of Russian high society to the cold brutal battlefields around Europe, one is propelled into the lives of a range of characters from aristocratic families as they grow up during this period - Tolstoy is very good at developing his characters. Although renowned for its sheer length, which requires a lot of endurane, this is not difficult to read (although that may depend on the translation)

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn)

A powerful and chilling account of a day in a gulag as recounted by an inmate. Written by a former prisoner of the gulag system.

The Diary of a Nobody (Grossmith Brothers)

Published over 100 years ago, the 'Diary of a Nobody' is written by Charles Pooter, a middle class office clerk residing in 1890's North London. Pooter is obssesed with his social status, this is what makes the novel hilarious. I has several Lol moments reading this, which is rare when I read.

Sorry to make this comment, but what's this got to do with the Reading FC board?! OK, interesting maybe, but I sadly miss sufficient numbers of members writing about Championship issues ...

The end of 'The Road'

But too much repetition nonetheless
