Do wildcards ruin British players?

Katie o Brian today matched Boggos feat, of playing eight Eight Wimbledon first round matches as a wildcard. between them they've won one match in those sixteen attempts.

Clearly, the wildcard system isn't doing what it's trumped up to do; benefiting young brits by giving them a free shot at the big time. It gives them a free shot, but that doesn't benefit them.

Lets say we stopped giving these players wildcards. They would then have to work through the qualifying rounds or rise the rankings, meaning they'd have to work harder to get to Wimbledon. In the long run, that hard work would benefit them.

Of the many things killing British tennis, is the Wildcard system one of them?

Could not believe the first set 6-0 in 14 minutes to a woman age 40. A better fight in the second set but still rather embarrassing for Katy O`Brien. Agree OP, the wildcards should not be given out like this to British players. Entry into Wimbledon should be earned with ranking or qualfying. Cruel to be kind

The fact is, tennis is'nt that popular. It generally only attracts interest from the middle-classes and neglects the huge pool of talent that is the general population, which is, imo, why we have no talent worth shouting about.
Couple this with what seems to be ludicrous 'wild cards' to basic no-hopers (no offence intended to those involved) and ladies and gentleman, i give you British Tennis.

P.S.
I have no axe to grind. I like Tennis. I like and have played many forms of sport in my life.

wildcards are just a way of cheating the system and should be abolished for every tournamet perhaps other than a top player like delpo being out injured for a long period thru no fault of his own

that's the only instance i would allow wild cards

it's just a comfort blanket to the mediocre british players, they get a few bob and don't have to push themselves like they should be doing or am i just being a bit harsh?

No. That's exactly my point

The harsh thing is gifting them the Wildcards, so they become more lazy.

I don't understand why it makes them lazy; but if it does it needs to be taken away from them.Give them some real incentive to improve their game.

I see James Ward after his "exploits" at Queens is being sponsored by "The Sun" newspaper at Wimbledon, and will have "The Sun" motif on his shirt. How desperate, tacky and embarrassing is that?
