The best for 40 years, but i am old enough to remember Arkle,his performances in handicaps giving 2 stone plus to quality horses,and winning in fast times gives Kauto a lot to find.
Arkle is in my opinion 14lbs better than kauto overall.
Kauto might have lived with Arkle in a King George, but would not have got near him in a Gold Cup.

Ah i would say Arkle probably was better because race horses were better then they are an all round stronger animal bigger muscles thicker legs.In a hundred years or so there going to have to mix the bloodlines with hunters because the racehorse will be too pure meaning weak legs,lack of muscle and deformalities not to mention the internal problems.

Arkle smashed the course record at Sandown by SEVENTEEN seconds, carrying 12 stone 7 and giving the next nearest horse in the handicap 16lbs (who was the second best NH horse in Europe at the time, Mill House) If that's not grounds for legendary status, I'm Britney Spears.
Of course Arkle was a freak of nature - there's unlikely ever to be another one, and the weight conceding feats won't happen in this day and age, because of both changes to the handicap system and the way that horses are now campaigned to "maximise potential" - which means going for the most likely race to win, rather than trying to face top class opponents in every race.
